Russian Refinery Halts Half Its Capacity Following a Ukrainian Drone Attack

By Tsvetana Paraskova - Mar 25, 2024, 9:30 AM CDT

A refinery in southwestern Russia owned and operated by state oil giant Rosneft has halted roughly half of its crude processing capacity following a drone attack from Ukraine over the weekend, industry sources told Reuters on Monday.

On Saturday, Dmitry Azarov, governor of the Samara region where Rosneft’s Kuibyshev oil refinery is located, said that the facility was attacked by drones. One of the two primary crude refining units at the refinery caught fire, the governor said, as quoted by Russian news agency Interfax. There were no casualties, Azarov added.

Ukraine has stepped up attacks on oil refineries in Russia in recent weeks, which have reduced Russian refining capacity, and which, reportedly, have the White House concerned about rising international prices.

The United States has repeatedly urged Ukraine to halt its drone attacks on Russian oil refineries due to Washington’s assessment that the strikes could lead to Russian retaliation and push up global oil prices, the Financial Times reported on Friday, citing sources familiar with the exchange.

Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries in recent weeks have taken out as much as 600,000 barrels in daily processing capacity in Russia, according to commodity trading major Gunvor.

“It is significant because obviously this is gonna hit the distillate exports straight away,” Gunvor chief executive Torbjörn Törnqvist told Bloomberg on the sidelines of the CERAWeek conference in Houston last week.

“So that will probably take down exports by a couple of hundred thousand barrels, so to me, it’s a distillate problem,” the executive added.

Lower refining capacity in the second quarter, due to refinery maintenance and emergency repairs following the attacks, could be one of the reasons why Russia said it would focus on cuts to oil production instead of exports in its voluntary supply reduction as part of OPEC+ in the second quarter, analysts say.

This is soooo wierd. I only say that because, if memory serves - and probably in this very thread - so many folks were calling for the end of the Russian energy complex because "they'd be running out of parts to replace equipment" like a year or more ago. Yet, none of that happened.

  3. In the video, the fellow talks about Russia's hypersonic missiles and makes the point that the sanctions obviously are not working because they are still making these missiles, allegedly. That may be true, but it is worth noting that some pundits present a different assessment and argument.

Instead, it is argued that Russia has had these missiles for a long time, and has a limited number but did not want to use them on Ukraine but to save them for a fight against NATO if it came to that. Putin has always had that dilemma. He knows that fighting Ukraine and fighting NATO are two different animals. So on one hand he wants to eliminate Ukraine and also use some of his advanced weapons to scare off Nato, but he has to be careful about using his advanced weapons up but then have to fight Nato. The argument is that the sanctions are in fact preventing him from producing replacement missiles - especially the advanced ones- so he is managing a limited number. We don't know the answer but those factors are there for Vlad to worry about.

Interestingly, Russia also has severe problems with convention artillery too and that problem is growing by the day. Now, you may be thinking "SAY WHAT". Everyone knows that Russia is firing five to ten times the shells as Ukraine and has a mountain of new shells coming from North Korea, and some from China that no one talks about. All of that is true.

But the problem is not with the shells, it is now with the actual artillery pieces/guns. The barrels are beginning to burn out very rapidly with thousands and thousands and thousands of rounds pumped through them. And it is fairly clear- just by talking to the Russian soldiers themselves- that very few of them are being replaced either through manufacturing or import. So all those shells will not be much help unless you replacement guns to go with them. And that also is dilemma for the Ruskies. Do I pump those shells harder and faster in an attempt to advance on the stall front line or do I save the barrels to defend the current lines? Meanwhile American, Australian, and European shell production is finally coming online.

In addition, the Russians have compensated for the gun barrel problem by increasingly using the guns on their tanks and although that works in the short term, it is turning into a total disaster. Tank guns are meant for periodic brief targeted use- not to be used as stationary artillery units and cranking shells through them all day. Now the tank barrels are burning out which makes the tank useless too- and, again, Russia's ability to replace them is very limited.

Those burned out gun barrels are killing a lot of Ruskies too as their chambers explode when fired and/or shoot crooked. So that is a little bonus.

As usual, I say that Ukraine is in a very, very tough spot and am not saying otherwise. Just saying Vlad has plenty to worry about too.

  4. It is kind of interesting that Belarus Boy is publicly disagreeing with Putin right when Putin needs some support for his bullshit stories.

BellyBoy needs to be careful about falling out of a window. Putin has men who can help him fall out of that window if he is too fat to do it by himself. Yeh, Vlad is always there to help

Lukashenko contradicts Putin, says Moscow terrorists were fleeing to Belarus, not Ukraine

Although the ISIS jihadist group claimed responsibility for the Crocus music hall attack, Russia’s president blamed Kyiv.
