  1. "Fear and hatred" in the 37th Ukrainian Marine Brigade

Only 130 out of 450 men of the 505th battalion in the occupied AFU's territories survived, complain the fighters.

However, a new interesting story has emerged in this brigade: fighters are mobilised in non-existent units, which leads to non-payment of salaries and no chance of receiving financial compensation.

In other words, officially they are in the 37th brigade, but when the authorities see the unit number, they throw up their hands and say that there is no such unit in the Ukrainian military.

Russia lost more than "four companies" of troops in the space of 24 hours, a Ukrainian military official said on Sunday, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that a counteroffensive was progressing well.

"Every day turns into hell for Russians. Our soldiers skilfully destroy the enemy," Brigadier General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, commander of Ukrainian troops in the southern Tavriia sector, said in a post on his Telegram channel.

Ukraine launched its long anticipated counteroffensive to recapture Russian-occupied territory in early June. Deputy Ukrainian Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said on Monday morning that Ukraine's armed forces has so far retaken eight settlements, while Zelensky aide Mykhailo Podolyak has suggested that a decisive counteroffensive from Kyiv hasn't yet begun.

Maliar said Ukraine has liberated the settlements of: Novodarovka, Levadne, Storozheve, Makarivka, Blagodatne, Lobkove, Neskuchne and Piatykhatky. She also said that over the past two weeks, Ukraine's military has advanced seven kilometers (four miles) to the south, recapturing 113 square kilometers (44 square miles) of its territory. This couldn't immediately be verified by Newsweek.

"In the Tavriia direction, units of missile troops and artillery of the Defense Forces performed 1,829 fire missions during the day," wrote Tarnavskyi. "Over the last day, the enemy's losses in killed and wounded amounted to more than four companies."

Depending on the type of troops, a company in the Russian army can number anywhere from 30 to 150 soldiers, according to GlobalSecurity.org, a U.S. think tank.

Tarnavskyi said Ukraine destroyed and damaged 77 items of Russian military equipment.

"In particular, a Ka-52 helicopter, 24 tanks, 12 BMP units, 5 BBM, 3 MTLB [various types of armored vehicles], 2 armored personnel carriers, 2 Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicle, a Zala unmanned aerial vehicle, Sturm-S anti-tank missile system."

He added that Ukraine's armed forces destroyed 12 Russian ammunition storage sites.

The British Defense Ministry assessed on Sunday that both Russia and Ukraine have suffered significant losses since the counteroffensive kicked off.

"In recent days, heavy fighting has continued, with the most intense combat focused in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, western Donetsk Oblast, and around Bakhmut," it said, noting that Ukraine has made small advances in these areas.

"In the south, Russian forces often conduct relatively effective defensive operations. Both sides are suffering high casualties, with Russian losses likely the highest since the peak of the battle for Bakhmut in March," the ministry said.

Zelensky on Sunday praised Ukraine's armed forces for being "very effective in repelling assaults" near Avdiivka in the Donetsk region.

"Our troops are on the move: position by position, step by step, we are going forward," he said.

Newsweek has contacted Russia's Defense Ministry for comment via email.

I haven't kept up really, but when does Ukraine get F-16's?
Someone told me this weekend that we (or NATO?) are training pilots.
What will that mean? Is Russia using attack jets? Again I have not kept up, but I thought it was all missiles.

So if they start using F-16's, what exactly will their mission be? Will they be geo-fenced to stay out of Russia proper? Zelenski has wanted these things forever... I wonder what he'll do with them if (when) he gets them?

Bombing troops/targets on the ground seems like an obvious use, rail and bridges too... which leads to my next question... up until now, has Russia utilized their Mig's yet to any extent? Those pilots are probably pretty well trained. An F-16 is a fine bird, but not sure how it stands up to whatever Russia's latest iteration of fighters is. Pretty sure the one that looks like the F-15 has vectored thrust. That's a biggie in a dog-fight. That said however.. so are the West's advanced electronics, regardless of platform.

For now however... can someone tell me what Ukraine will do with them if they get them? The Patriot air defense systems seem to have the missile threat under control right? So assuming Ukraine gets these things, will they be offensive or defensive in nature?

  10. The Russian air situation continues to remain murky and baffling. In theory and actuality they have air superiority but it is baffling as to why it has not played a larger role. Some pundits have said that it is because their alleged air superiority is just an illusion as their army forces turned out to be. But I have heard other pundits say that Russia is saving much of their air forces as the last line of protection if Nato becomes involved and the homeland/Moscow need to be protected. Dunno. Just saying the F-16's allegedly fall short in some areas but Russian air forces seem to be falling short too so it is hard to flat out say who has superiority just because of the status of their equipment- ground or air. It is not just Russian jet fighter capability. They also have massive advanced bombers that everyone sort of expected would just fly in reduce cities and combat positions but they have not used them much. Again, the pundits are somewhat baffled and not sure whether they are holding back or Ukraine's aerial defense systems are too strong for the Russians or what so that do not want to send them just to be taken out.
