And yes.. Royal requires all passengers who claim they are vaccinated to provide proof of vaccination— which breaks DeSantis’ “rules” (which got rejected in court for applying to cruise lines).

Since Royal caters to families and does not require vaccination for under 16 until 2022 — I wonder how many of these cases were kids on this ship.

I will note that some other cruise lines are rejecting children onboard currently — hence avoiding this issue.

Ok, so we've established that Royal requires vaccinations for all adults. We've also established (from the article) that 98% of the infected were vaccinated.

But now you're clinging to the idea that these are kids?

Royal — also allows some exemptions for adults. But they require 95% of the passengers overall be vaccinated. They control this via their booking system.

I expect Royal will tighten up after this outbreak on their ship.

Ok, so thread title was misleading. Appreciate you finally coming clean and admitting that. I guess it was the "requires for ALL passengers" that was a bit off, right? The word "all"?

And how does this change the 98% of infected were vaccinated?

Under 20% of the INFECTED were vaccinated.

On this particular cruise ship 98% of the passengers were vaccinated— which prevented a wide scale breakout involving thousands.

In many ways — this cruise situation is good news. Even in the face of Omicron in a tightly packed environment— it can be seen that the majority of vaccinated individuals were protected and the huge majority of the infections were among a tiny group of unvaccinated people.

The article's direct quote, once again:

Of the 48 who tested positive for COVID-19, 98% were fully vaccinated. Royal Caribbean said in a statement that the passengers who tested positive

That means of the 48 who tested positive, 47 of them were vaccinated. You're claiming that number is ~10. You seem to be at odds with the Miami herald. Are you saying they are wrong?

You are correct I read it wrong.

This is still good news from the perspective that none of the people were severely ill. And the breakout on a crowded cruise ship was confined to a mere 48 people. All thanks to vaccination.

The bad news is that until Omicron showed up -- cruise ships may have been seeing one or two people who developed Covid after testing negative at the initial boarding -- but not these type of larger breakouts with Delta, etc.

No worries. Ok, so we're good on that.

So Royal doesn't require full vaccinations, we have cleared that up, and 98% of the people who were infected were vaccinated. Also, of the infected passengers, all were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms (also in the article).

So if the vaccinated and unvaccinated who were sick had the same response to the virus, and both groups got sick...

The bad news is that until Omicron showed up -- cruise ships may have been seeing one or two people who developed Covid after testing negative at the initial boarding -- but not these type of larger breakouts with Delta, etc. This changes to ball game for cruise lines who are likely to endure larger breakouts. Of course, this will lead to people unbooking cruises just as the industry is starting to recover.

Now imagine if those on that cruise were not vaccinated... a higher risk in that they would have had a severe Covid illness, hospitalization, ICU admission, or Death.
    • Had the above occurred, Cruise ships would go into lockdown again.
Their Covid protocols were probably as good as the protocols used by the NYC Anime Convention...advertising for vaccinated only while at the same time letting in VIP people without checking their vaccination status and allowing indoors "not masking". :D
