I like it. The first song Solar Fire brings it. The Old Vids are not a pissing contest. One pic shows a fledgeling band already one album with original songs behind them playing in a glorified garage. No fancy stage, no fancy costumes, just some electricity and lots of practice. Same members. Same simple drum, bass, lead. Did they rock the crowd? Chuck Berry up top, charming the Matrons of the symphony with Johnny B. Good and gyrating onstage in a manner quite apart from the ballroom dance WASPS of the period would commonly associate with musical appreciation. Some Musicologists would credit Chuck as the midwife of Rock and Roll. They are free to argue that crap ad nauseum. The dude did attend as an active participant in the Dawn of Rock and Roll, and so is a meaningful contribution to this thread. Tho he is so old now that he is pushing up daisys as we speak. His "spirit of the age" lives beyond him but time marches on.
"spirit of the age" included nightly news with Viet Nam death counts and footage of conflict zones in play at the time, stretchers and all, right there with that greenish hued TV Dinner. The Draft put some on the shelf and others right in the middle of something that had no defined outcome. Fortunate Son: Today's version of this out there somewhere in the Rock and Roll genre?
"Fortunate Son" Some folks are born, made to wave the flag Ooh, they're red, white and blue And when the band plays, "Hail To The Chief" Ooh, they point the cannon at you It ain't me, it ain't me I ain't no senator's son, no It ain't me, it ain't me I ain't no fortunate one Some folks are born, silver spoon in hand Lord, don't they help themselves? Yoh But when the tax man comes to the door Lord, the house look a like a rummage sale, yeah It ain't me, it ain't me I ain't no millionaire's son, no It ain't me, it ain't me I ain't no fortunate one, no Yeah, some folks inherit star-spangled eyes Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord And when you ask them, "How much should we give?" Ooh, they only answer, "More, more, more"
Standing in the rain with his head hung low Couldn't get a ticket it was a sold out show. Heard the roar of the crowd he could picture the scene. Put his ear to the wall then like a distant scream. He heard one guitar just blew him away Saw stars in his eyes and the very next day. [Ryder:] Bought a beat up six string in a secondhand store Didn't know how to play it but he knew for sure That one guitar felt good in his hands. Didn't take long to understand. Just one guitar slung way down low Was a one-way ticket only one-way to go. So he started rockin' ain't never gonna stop [Finn and Ryder:] Gotta keep on rockin' [Ryder:] Someday he's gonna make it to the top. [Finn and Ryder:] And be a Juke Box Hero got stars in his eyes [Ryder:] He's a Juke Box Hero. [Ryder:] In a town without a name in a heavy downpour Thought he passed his own shadow by the backstage door. [Finn:] Like a trip through the past to that day in the rain And that one guitar made his whole life change. Now he needs to keep [Finn and Ryder:] rockin' he just can't stop Gotta keep on rockin' [Finn:] that boy has got to stay on top. [Finn and Ryder:] And be a Juke Box Hero got stars in his eyes He's a Juke Box Hero Yeah Juke Box Hero ([Finn:] Oh) With that one guitar he'll come alive Come alive tonight. ([Finn:] Yeah) He's gotta keep on rockin' [Finn:] He just can't stop [Ryder:] He just can't stop [Finn and Ryder:] Gotta keep on rockin' [Finn:] That boy has got to stay on top [Finn and Ryder:] He's got a real Juke Box Hero got stars in his eyes.
