In 2024, Republican EV attacks may fall short as swing states reap investment

WASHINGTON, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Electric vehicles are a "hoax," they do not work, and they are strengthening China's economy at the expense of American jobs.

Those are among the criticisms that contenders for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, including former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, have leveled on the campaign trail in recent weeks.

But while EVs have emerged as a common foe for Republicans seeking the country's top job, they are increasingly a source of tax revenue and employment in the states that will determine the winner of the 2024 presidential election.

That has created a potential opportunity that President Joe Biden and some Democratic congressional candidates are seeking to exploit to win support before next November's vote, according to 25 Democratic and Republican strategists, local officials, labor leaders and a review of campaign literature.

There have been roughly $128 billion in investments in domestic EV and battery manufacturing announced since the 2022 passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, or IRA. That law, supported by Biden and congressional Democrats, created tax credits to boost domestic EV manufacturing.

Of that investment, $48 billion - or one third - has taken place in Georgia, Arizona, Nevada and Michigan, according to an analysis done by advocacy group Climate Power at Reuters' request. Those four states, along with Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and North Carolina, are the arguably the most competitive in the country...

On the presidential campaign trail, Republicans have struck a different tone. They have made clear they see IRA subsidies as government overreach, while expressing concern that minerals vital for EV manufacturing, like graphite and manganese, often originate in China.

Trump and other Republicans, who tend to back traditional energy sources like oil and coal along with gasoline-powered cars and trucks, have also appealed to the anxieties of the United Auto Workers union.

Many UAW members are wary of EVs as they require less labor to assemble than combustion engine vehicles. While the UAW is strong in Michigan, the union is weaker in the South and Southwest.

"Joe Biden's electric vehicle obsession helps China, hurts American consumers and families, and is a pathetic non-solution to skyrocketing gas prices under his watch," said Anna Kelly, press secretary for the Republican National Committee.

A Trump spokesperson pointed Reuters to a recent policy announcement in which the former president said EV manufacturing would harm workers. "What's happening to our auto workers is an absolute disgrace and an outrage beyond belief," Trump said.

The DeSantis campaign did not respond to a request for comment, though he has been consistently critical of EVs.

"Why would you want to knowingly make this country more dependent on what goes on in China?" DeSantis said in July.

Biden's campaign pointed Reuters to a statement from Kevin Munoz, a campaign spokesman, who said Trump's plan would mean more Chinese EV manufacturing jobs and fewer American jobs.

"Simply put: Trump had the United States losing the EV race to China and if he had his way, the jobs of the future would be going to China," Munoz said.

Some elected Republicans at the state level are approaching EVs with decidedly more nuance, which can complicate Democrats' messaging efforts.

Brian Kemp, the Republican governor of Georgia and a Trump adversary, opposes the IRA. But he has touted state-level tax credits that have brought EV manufacturers in-state, and has said he wants Georgia to be the "electric mobility capital" of America.

Brian Kemp has been infected with Tubervillism. It infects those against/for Trump while dismissing Biden's multiple billions of dollars in economic investments in many states of America. :D

The global electric vehicle (EV) sector is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.9% between 2023 and 2035, according to new report from data and analytics company GlobalData, Power Technology's parent company.

It took five and a half years for total EV sales to hit one million units in the US. The leap to two million took only 18 months. JD Power forecasts the three millionth EV sale to happen in December 2023, taking just 12 months. Automakers in the US are expected to sell four million EVs by Q3 2024.

If you’re looking to buy an EV this holiday season, it might be prudent to wait till next year. Starting January 2024, eligible buyers will be able to transfer their $7,500 federal tax credit to a dealer, resulting in lower point-of-sale prices. Under the existing scheme, buyers can benefit from the federal tax credit only after they've filed their tax returns for the subsequent year.

Reminder, Trump administration, many other Republicans and 8 Democrats fought like hell to prevent individual states (e.g. California) from having Electric Vehicle (EV) mandates.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom celebrated the regulations, saying the state would continue to "lead the revolution towards our zero-emission transportation future."

    By the way...

Here are the 25 members of Congress who drive electric cars

AOC and two House Republicans have gone plug-in. Ted Cruz is thinking about it. Josh Hawley says, “Absolutely not.” In all, at least 25 members of Congress drive electric vehicles, a POLITICO E&E News tally found.

What about the Republican/Democrat voter's views on Electric Vehicles...Absolutely nobody cares about this stuff ?

    Electric Vehicle Voter Correlation

List of states in the United States of America that have adopted California's ZEV...Absolutely nobody cares about this stuff

Fourteen states have adopted California’s zero emissions vehicle (ZEV) mandate, and we are working on additional analyses that control for ZEV, as well as reporting results separately for ZEV and non-ZEV states.

    https://www.c2es.org/document/us-state-clean-vehicle-policies-and-incentives/

The results thus far point to a strong and enduring correlation between political ideology and U.S. EV adoption. The EV market has grown in scale dramatically over this time period, yet we find that, at least through 2022, new registrations continue to be overwhelmingly concentrated in the most Democratic counties.

What about the views of my Kentucky...Absolutely nobody cares about this stuff. ?

Beshear calls for proposals to expand electric vehicle charging network in Kentucky

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Gov. Andy Beshear, D-Ky., announced that the state is seeking proposals from private-sector organizations interested in helping Kentucky expand its electric vehicle charging network.

The governor shared the announcement in his weekly press conference, saying that the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet issued a final Request for Proprosals to build up to 37 stations along Kentucky interstates and parkways after receiving approval from the Federal Highway Administration.

“Kentucky is the electric vehicle battery production capital of the United States of America, and we are leading the industry expansion by growing jobs and building out the supply chain,” Beshear said.

The Democratic governor said the move will “cement Kentucky’s status in the EV revolution by creating new infrastructure that encourages EV travel throughout the commonwealth.”

Most of the funding for the initiative will come from federal funding, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, with a match by private-entity funds.

I can go on about other federal funding plans that include "freebies to Americans"....why bother because these are issues only important to me (absolutely not important to anybody else) especially whenever I'm in the states for travel...right ???

    :D  :p

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 is a landmark United States federal law that aims to curb inflation by possibly reducing the federal government budget deficit, lowering prescription drug prices, and investing in domestic energy production while promoting clean energy.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inflation_Reduction_Act

Let us see...inflation has been curbed but not to the level that the FED feels the American people need because minimum wages or wages as a whole (it's rising in many states) not rising fast enough to withstand another inflation crisis...

The reason why I believe Wall Street is expecting several interest rate increases next year in 2024 is that Americans are still spending too much while bitching about higher costs of living (wages increasing but not fast enough)...

More interest rate increases possibly again in 2025 depending upon the growth of the economy. This is when the Republicans are in control of the Oval Office...we'll see a mean reversion of wages in new jobs, and the elderly lose or see their social security under threat/making life very difficult for them...

Reducing the federal government budget deficit ?

    federal-government-budget-deficit-by-presidents.png

If I'm not mistaken...does giving all that money to Ukraine, Taiwan, and Israel increase our Federal Budget considering our history of crazy rising budgets when at War or supporting other countries at/near War...

Simply, shouldn't Biden's Federal Budget numbers be higher by end of 2023 because of the invasion of Russia into Ukraine in 2022 ???

Also, I expect the retirement age to increase to a whopping 70 years of age. As for the ability to live...Republicans will be very comfortable with most Americans living like the poor in the Southern states as rent will increase to levels so high...making the current living expenses tolerable.

Foreign Affairs...more ass-kissing and more Americans living abroad while a new Republican sits in the Oval Office.

Domestic Affairs...increasing mass shootings, increasing crackdown by the police, more university closures, increasing home foreclosures, fewer jobs offering college tuition deb relief/down from the current +300, more ethnic riots...

More prayer in schools even if it is not your religion...the law will change for this to happen.

Enough chaos that people will look back and think the Biden administration years were not so bad.

Yet, if that Republican is a convicted Trump...more chaos as he sets out to get revenge like a Mafia boss while making White Nationalism more symbolic/on the rise and ethnic minorities more oppressed except for the wealthy ones.

Enjoy the bed that America will go back to while taking many steps backward and we fall further behind in protecting the environment/decreasing our ability to protect ourselves from Natural Disasters/Cost of living going higher...Green/Hawley/Gaetz leading the country down the rabbit hole...the South has risen because of a political minority shaping America.

Texas food banks are feeling that need. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic response in 2020, the staff at El Buen Samaritano would provide food to more than 300 families every Tuesday and Thursday.

Now they’re seeing around 250 families each day, still well above the pre-pandemic average of 150, according to Luis Garcia, director of technology and analytics at El Buen Samaritano. Many other food banks, thanks to inflation, housing costs, and stagnant federal funding for food assistance, have seen demand rise past even what they saw during the height of the global coronavirus pandemic.

A little off-topic, some countries have laws in place to protect consumers from price gauging/rent increases in poor communities especially when inflation is declining...Texas is a state controlled by Republicans who fight like hell against social assistance. They will see a higher cost of living, more need for food banks, inadequate preparation for their energy crisis during natural disasters, and so on...under Republican management of the state...

Governor Abbott did not want the SNAP program (federal funding) to increase in the last years of the Trump administration and especially during the Biden administration. Governor Abbott is killing Texas under the umbrella of Tubervillism.

He recently announced the approval of SNAP benefits after many years of not approving it but he only did it now after mounting pressure from the Democrats...knowing he could not wait any longer for the Republicans to control the White House again.

    https://gov.texas.gov/news/post/gov...ap-benefit-replacements-due-to-severe-weather

The real sadness, my sadness...the sustainability in Native American communities hit by Natural Disasters will be lost under the Republican administration that will take control in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Elections along with increasing disenfranchising of minority voters.

Last of all, in my opinion, there will be another Pandemic while the Republicans are in control or maybe we'll see a deadlier virus variant of Covid when the Republicans fought like hell against vaccines...we all know how that went in 2020...they praised Trump's Operation Warp Speed when he was President until Trump lost.

Now with Covid infection/hospitalization/death at their lows thanks to Vaccines and Omicron...watch carefully for their tune to change about vaccines when they're sitting in the Oval Office as a result of the 2024 U.S. Presidential Elections.

A convicted Trump will be hailed as their savior again as he compares himself to Jesus Christ again...something that Adolf Hitler did too after his attacks on ethnic minorities, immigrants as a reaction to the great depression especially after his criminal convictions.
