Slavery was the main cause of secession of the states of the Confederacy. Secession was the main cause of the war. Slavery had been going on for generations - but no war.
The war was started and fought primarily to restore the union. NOT free the slaves. It's a documented historical fact than MANY in the union ranks were bitterly grumbling after the emancipation proclamation. For the simple and undeniable reason that they were risking their lives for the union. Not the African Negros.

Take General William Tecumseh Sherman as an example. It's an historical fact he had a very low opinion of the negro. His goal was to win the war - to restore the union. The good general even allowed a large group of freed slaves, that were following his army, to drown while crossing a river. Does that sound like the actions of someone who gave two shits about the slaves to you?
