Recommended Software for Backtesting

Discussion in 'Trading Software' started by davewolfs, Jul 16, 2008.

  1. Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum. I have some ideas that I would like to implement and then simulate with some sort of backtesting software.

Could some of you recommend some potential software that I should consider.

So far the ones that I am aware of are Telechart/Block and NinjaTrader.

I am hoping that some of you could comment on either of these choices or recommend some alternatives.

Also, for NinjaTrader, I realize that I would need to import historical data, what is the easiest and cheapest way to obtain this data?

    Thanks in advance,

    Dave

  2. Are you looking for free software? Do you need it connected to your brokerage?

  3. Free is obviously better, but I am willing to looking into a commercial package potentially later on if the price is right.

I guess where I stand is that I have sprung some curiosity with respect to algorithmic trading and would like to put some ideas to the test. So right now, I simply need the basics, a tool that will allow me to test my models and the required data to backtest. If/when I do find something that works I can look at a more commercial package if it will help with my studies.

So for someone starting out, where would be the best place to start?

Any advice, tips or book recommendations are highly appreciated.

    Dave
