    The Sacramento Municipal Utility District in Sacramento, California is currently recruiting for a Senior Energy Commodity Contract Specialist. This position is responsible to procure energy and energy-related commodities under long term purchase agreements in order to reliably serve the needs of SMUD's customer/owners and to administer such agreements. (Energy-related commodities include: electricity, natural gas, renewable electricity, renewable gas, renewable energy credits, electric transmission, gas transmission, gas storage, greenhouse gas (GHG) offsets, GHG allowances, etc.). In addition, this position will perform advanced professional technical analyses in assessing and recommending specific energy and energy-related commodity opportunities to SMUD management to ensure that the procurement of energy and energy-related commodities meets SMUD s needs at the most lowest costs considering within SMUD's tolerance for risk.

    The Eugene Water and Electric Board is currently seeking a Real Time Trader for real time negotiations and implementation of power sales, purchases, and exchanges of power and transmission products over a “next hour” to 24-hour time frame. This position is responsible for knowing current marketplace price and supply conditions and real-time trading practices. The successful candidate will operate, monitor and control EWEB's hydroelectric and thermal generating plants through SCADA and controlling by AGC to maximize their value within license conditions. All while undertaking profitable off-system sales as power market conditions and EWEB risk management policies and procedures warrant. They will serve in a back-up role to Short-Term Traders.     This role is responsible for designing, implementing and maintaining risk measurement and valuation models, including forward price curves, correlation matrices and volatility surfaces.

    The position is located in the metropolitan New York area.

    Clearly a responsible position, it has both the responsibilities of a highly visible position and the opportunities available to such a person.

    Qualifications

    5+ years experience as an quantitative analyst in the energy markets, specializing in a risk, valuation, or modeling function .

    Familiarity with the entire energy complex covering some or all of the key products: crude, products, power and natural gas.

    Strong understanding of stochastic calculus & applied mathematics, derivatives (futures/swaps/options), and risk measures (e.g., Greeks, volatilities, correlations, Value-at-Risk, stress testing)

    Experience with implementing models to adapt flat or incomplete market forward price data to create a model-based forward price curve.

    Expertise in energy option valuation.

    Complete familiarity with all alternative approaches to calculating Value-at-Risk (VaR) and a demonstrated ability to understand the benefits and weaknesses of the various approaches.

    A PhD is desired, but someone with a MS with excellent work experience would be happily considered.

    Energy Market Risk Specialist — Job 1703P

    This position is a great position for a junior-mid level professional in the energy space.

    Part of a corporate risk management group led by a new Chief Risk Officer, it offers stability and a solid learning experience.

    The position is located in the metropolitan New York area.

    The client is emphasizing the understanding of the physical as well as financial energy market. This particular position is involved with the risk oversight of the commercial and industrial power and natural gas business.

    The Risk Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day generation of risk reports, maintenance of system data integrity, and programming new risk reports and applications in conjunction with the firm’s technology team.

    Qualifications

    1-2 years work experience in an energy-related risk management or trading operation.

    Bachelors in finance, engineering, applied mathematics, physics or related fields.

    Strong Visual Basic (VBA) programming skills.

    Strong attention to details to perform reconciliation between business unit trading ledgers and position reports with corporate-level reporting.

    FTR Analyst — Job 1681P

    The client is a strong physical/financial trading group in the Midwest, which has continued to profit in power and natural gas markets, even in a difficult environment.

    This is an excellent opportunity for the analyst with 2 or more years of experience who wants to move into a trading role in the future and really understands the transmission grid.

    The client has strong analytical talent on board, but those resources are committed to other FTR markets. So this position will focus on NY, NE and California.

    A MS degree or PhD in engineering or physical science with excellent math skills is expected, plus indepth experience in analyzing transmission markets.

    Senior Transmission Contracts Specialist (7439)
    Serve as a specialist to provide commercial transmission related support for managing portfolio congestion and interconnection for new and existing projects. Evaluate futures and results of models produced by company organizations. Perform strategic, marketing and tactical planning in the conduct of operations. Responsible for designing/developing strategies for financial hedging opportunities. Conduct analysis and make recommendations for CRR and FTR auctions. Responsible for providing calculations to estimate the available transmission capacity at potential development locations and to make recommendations to management.

    Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Masters Degree preferred). Ten years' experience with at least five years of actual experience in strategy development, analytical and/or modeling and related transmission experience required. Experience in a merchant environment would be beneficial. Should be familiar and possibly have experience with the nodal production cost software such as DAYZER, UPLAN, or PROMOD and interpretation of their results. Prior FTR or CRR experience would be a significant asset. Should posses the knowledge of how to create load flow cases and contingency analysis and interpret results. Must be able to use PSS/E, and/or PowerWorld. Familiarity with MISO and PJM will be required. Also knowledge of FERC rulings in any of these markets is an asset. Must be familiar with all NERC regions and the associated processes to reserve wholesale transmission.

    Senior Load Forecasting Specialist (7433)
    Direct and participate in the processes to produce forecasts of electricity consumption by monitoring process and outcome indicators against plan and taking positive action when necessary. Forecast future loads, market conditions and providing updates on and analysis of sales and revenues in the electric power market. Provide improvements in existing processes and designs for new processes and associated process indicators to improve speed and accuracy and/or reduce costs. Assist Manager in ensuring that impacts of Marketing Strategy (products and prices) are accurately reflected in sales and revenue forecasts. As an expert in one or more load forecasting techniques, direct the technical direction and operation of economic end-use, econometric load forecasting and other associated models. Participate as needed on appropriate NERC, SERC, EPRI and associated industry committees. Direct the work of other analysts in the performance of the above functions.

    M.S. degree in Economics, or comparable related field of study, or equivalent education, training & experience. Doctorate in Economics is desirable. Must have least 10 years of progressive experience in load forecasting or closely related work experience with in-depth knowledge, skills and abilities in forecasting techniques.

    Engineer – Power Plant Development (7230)
    Support project development and project management activities for domestic power generation projects. Participate in conceptual design and environmental permitting; solicitation and evaluation of proposals for technical services, equipment and construction; contract administration; and general project management.

    Provide engineering support on natural gas fired combined cycle or cogeneration development projects including mass heat balances, emissions calculations, site layouts, performance estimates, capital and O&M cost estimates, interface and negotiate with vendors and EPC contractors

    Bachelors’ Degree in Engineering is required as is at least 5 years experience in the power generation industry (as a developer or engineer with a generation development company, an engineering firm or a relevant equipment manufacturer). Must also possess strong analytical, planning, organizational, and communication skills; be energetic and self-motivated. Must also be capable of handling multiple and diverse tasks.

    Requirements:
    The Manager, Short Term Trading NE must have the following technical/ specialized skills:
    ▪ Broad understanding of the characteristics, drivers, and key elements of the ISO-NE and adjacent markets.
    ▪ General knowledge of hedging and trading techniques.
    ▪ General understanding of options theory, including valuation techniques of standard and exotic options.
    ▪ General understanding of risk measurement techniques such as VaR.
    ▪ The Manager, Short-Term Trading NE will have a working knowledge of finance, accounting, production, operations, and public policy issues facing the ERCOT market. He will be a team player and share information frequently with Originators, Portfolio Managers and Analysts, and Operations personnel.
    ▪ He/she will be accountable for delivering positive financial results from the use of the company’s capital. In the process of trading, there will be a wide range of activities involved in market analysis, including scanning for trading opportunities, deciding how much capital to allocate to specific trades, developing optimal trade execution strategies, and managing the risks of trades.
    ▪ The Manager, Short-Term Trading NE operates in a fast-paced dynamic commodity market environment, where there are often time constraints and time sensitive deadlines. He/she must consider the potential trades over several different time horizons and the interrelations and connectivity between several disparate factors, such a wind forecasts, coal pricing, natural gas basis, volatility, transmission availability, and market rules.
    ▪ The Manager, Short-Term Trading NE will have a broad network of internal and external resources, and will gather information relevant to the execution of the trading strategies. He/she also will:
    ▪ Execute short-term hedges at the request of CPM or LPMs
    ▪ Work closely with the Director, Term Trading NE/NY

    Purpose: The position of Director, PJM Trading develops and executes trading Strategies in power and natural gas markets with an emphasis on proprietary trading, also executes, as required, natural gas financial hedges for the Company's LNG, Generation, and Retail businesses.
    Reports to: Vice President, Trading
    Location: Houston, TX

    Job Functions
    Essential Functions
    ▪ Routinely trades power forwards, heat rate spark spread or power basis products, NG futures, options and swaps on exchanges and look-alikes in the OTC markets relating to the PJM power markets to which the company has exposure.
    ▪ Analyzes PJM markets and develops and executes proprietary trading strategies
    ▪ Provides market assessments to assist CPM and LPMs in developing long term hedging strategies.
    ▪ Provides periodic presentations to management with regard to strategy and financial performance.

    Education /Experience
    ▪ Bachelor degree (technical, economics, finance, or accounting) and 5 years trading experience
    ▪ Demonstrated knowledge in all aspects of financial power trading
    ▪ Thorough understanding of North American power and gas markets, including, but not limited to, supply and demand, logistics, regulations and operations
    ▪ Strong understanding of derivative financial trading products, including swaps, futures and options.

    PS, I actually managed to help a client of mine (who came to me as a prominent equity pairs trader for Don Bright's Group in Vancouver) get of all things, a power trading job in Vancouver.

    He originally came to me wanting to learn about futures spread trading and arbitrage, which of course he did. Well, one thing led to the other...

    Amazing how life works out.
