The main difference is Obama was a lame duck at the time. Unelectable. Trump is electable, and must face the people, very soon, with how they feel about his selection. He could lose the election based on his selection. So he has skin in the game. Obama did not.
None of that matters, the constitution is clear, and they'll use this clarity in their favor this time around.
