  5. I have quickly skimmed through the lengthy wikipedia.org article on Jill Stein. Jill has an impressive academic record and appears to be a competent doctor, as does her husband. She seems to be a reformer against corporate malfeasance, is against those corporate subsidies that are fundamentally counterproductive, and is an advocate for improving food safety, especially involving children consuming multiple pesticides that are found in most meals. Jill believes in reallocating half of the US military budget towards social programs. She is a strong advocate of green energy. Jill was targeted by Democrats, but successfully swung some state towards Trump in 2016.

The above are things I personally can relate to. While Jill has ideas I strongly question, given voters have to “Mulligan” at least a few perceived deficiencies of any candidate, we can consider accepting a few of her perceived warts.

It is so challenging to overcome one’s closely held beliefs, even long after forgetting why or in what circumstances an opinion, often nearly intractable, was formed. The current Russia-Ukraine war is an example. Most everybody knows the war will lead to ever increasing destruction, seemingly without the possibility of any side feeling good about or accepting a potential peace settlement. How to break the lock? The same goes for people’s perceptions on politics. Some things are unilaterally accepted as “Truth” or “Must have”, blinding one to other possibilities.

It seems to me the political, geopolitical, economic, social, and environmental paths we are on are unsustainable, at least as measured by maintaining a resemblance of the status quo that only some of us are comfortable with. Actually, Jill wants to make the status quo comfortable to more of us. So much for the competence of the establishment, as further corroborated by direction of country polls, among others.

Is Jill Stein the one? Personally, I would like to see a substantive contest among several Green Party candidates to highlight their capabilities in their bid for our nation’s highest office.

2024 will be the gift that keeps on giving.
