Beijing: China reported nearly 50 deaths from coronavirus, as residents in Wuhan dispute the official death toll of 3300.

Mainland China had 48 new cases on Monday, the National Health Commission said in a statement, up from 31 new infections a day earlier.

All of the 48 cases were imported, bringing the total number of imported cases in China to 771 as of Monday.

The day before, local estimates of the death toll, based on numbers inferred from funeral homes, pointed to a much higher death figure.

Earlier in March, seven large funeral homes in Wuhan handed out urns with the remains of 500 people every day, which suggested a much higher toll, according Radio Free Asia.

Estimates were based on the cremation capacity of funeral homes.

Caixan.com reported 5000 urns - double the official death toll - had been delivered to Hankou Funeral Home in one day alone.

A resident of Hubei told the US-government backed outlet that "most people there now believe that more than 40,000 people died in the city before and during the lockdown."

There was no reported new case of local infection on Monday, according to the National Health Commission.
