Never trade the ES for momentum during the off hours. Globex's volume is just not enough for me to be effective. if you obtain a edge to become profitable, you can make a living day, 60k net, trading 3 contracts. The day rate is $500 (overnight rate is over 6k) per contract so you would need $1500 plus any room for a draw down. My draw downs have been low for some time now. I start with $2000 and have dropped below $1500 in margin only twice this year. I recently moved to 5 contracts per trade and have a margin account of roughly $3750.00. That process started with roughly $3100.00. Any profitable system will require you to post margin slightly above the required margins. Any losing system will go bust regardless of the margin account. Same for all markets.
Divergences have no place in my world but then i am a systematic trader and seek binary solutions . Divergences usually come on declining momentum and therefore i filter that . Each to their own .. That cat can lose its skin many ways
If a person is relatively new to trading, they should really take time to survey the landscape and "review the literature". It took me years to figure out by trial & error and hard experience I notice that no one mentions that most of the volume (in liquid markets) is automated. This is important to know. because once you understand what you are up against, you can adapt and learn how to 1) Identify opportunity and 2) how to structure trades. In my experience, the last piece of the puzzle was to learn to avoid (repetitive) stupid mistakes.
