Question: how to deal with trolls? Can't anybody do something about them?

Discussion in 'Feedback' started by baro-san, Jun 11, 2015.

  1. They have. Remember The Trouble With Scribbles and your vigorous defence of SLA, with loads of charts and multiple links to your material?

With this new self-moderation feature, would you be willing to tolerate someone else doing the same thing to one of your threads, or would you block that person as a troll?

On TL, back before the founder sold it (for tons of money), there were weekly and monthly tallies of the Most-Thanked posts (Post of the Week, Post of the Month), and those who "won" got Amazon gift certificates. I thought -- though I have nothing to support this other than an impression -- that this encouraged people to post "quality", or at least think about what they are doing as opposed to just shooting off their mouths. T2W used to give out annual awards in a number of categories. Maybe they still do. But those awards did tend to steer people toward the more useful content.

The ES thread wa started by me and is the longest thread on ET and also the most views. In fact, it is one of the longest threads on the interweb. I have stated that it is open for all to post to and have outlined rules for posting. Romik and Builder17 are the only ones who follow the rules, but I don't hit report etc.--Rather we just go on. I have stated that it is the people's journal and am very tolerant of others. I don't ask for special controls of the journal. I am a student of human nature. I know what the end result of the block feature will be. Debaters and debate will be silenced. It's as simple as that.

The purpose of the TWS thread was to attack the SLA and those who were attempting to implement it, so it should come as no surprise that those of us who are using it would defend it, particularly since the OP never even bothered to read the material. And since he put everyone who was a SLAyer on Ignore, there were never any responses to the efforts to clarify just what the SLA was/is and how it is implemented.

I can't think of any reason why I would do the same thing to someone else. There are many ways of making money, so why should I attack somebody for posting with regard to any particular means of doing so? I may think they're misguided, but it's not my money, so who cares? I never even heard of BS before he launched this campaign against the SLA, which is ongoing. Nor would I pull posts and charts out of people's journals for the sole purpose of ridiculing them, as he did and has and perhaps still does (most who were maintaining journals have abandoned them).

Anyone who wants to debate is welcome IF they take the time to at least read the material. But if they are interested only in disruption and hijacking and refused to let it go, then, yes, I'd block them, just as I would any other sociopath.

  5. I think this is a pity. There is something to learn everywhere and I've picked up useful stuff from even a 3 line post by someone not particularly well known. It's why I keep an open mind and subscribe to a whole range of threads.

The trouble with surrounding oneself with like minded people is you only hear echoes, and ET is going that way. It's the challenges and the contrarian views that force us to think.

Nonsense. Censorship would be preventing you from starting your own thread expressing disapproval of the subject matter. That's not going to happen.

Now you'll just have to work a little harder to express your opposition. No more crapping all over somebody else's thread just because he likes what you don't. Start your own thread(s), you just might enjoy it.

As you can see--it's already begun. Honest disagreement and differing viewpoint without foul language or personal attacks will now be viewed as "crapping all over somebody else's thread"---So, there you have it.

  10. How is The Trouble With Scribbles any different from your example of Price Action Trading is Total Crap?

I can understand your desire to post your point of view there, I've never been a fan of ET's 'there's only one way to do this' brigade, but you went on and on in the same way that is being condemned in this thread.

Someone like Surf believes passionately that his POV is the right one. Would you tolerate him expressing it as vigorously?

And for the record, I do believe in keeping an open mind. I have no overall objection to SLA, I draw lines as much as anyone else. If I disagree with anything, it is some of the terminology that reinvents what is commonly used, and some of the conclusions drawn. Heck, I've even read a lot of the stuff in the series of journals you kept. It is as good or as bad as any other way of trading.

It is precisely because of this that I am on the side of keeping debate going without silencing dissenting voices; it will only strangle the diversity and richness.

I do agree that one should be more circumspect when posting in Journals. That is the OPs house and should be respected as such. Post a dissenting view by all means, then leave it be. As for other threads, all's fair as far as I'm concerned.
