I was hoping someone could school me on dividends and what happens to a stocks price on the ex dividend date. I own some shares of RNE and I was alarmed to look at the chart today and see that it fell over 20%. After doing some investigating, it appears as though the ex dividend date is today. Now I am just trying to understand why this happens? Also I am not entirely clear about how dividends work? Does the company send you a check or does it just credit your cash balance of your account? Because as far as I know, I haven't reaped the benefits of the dividends that RNE pays out even though I've been holding it for around 6 months. Thanks a lot for the help!
