The New York Times reported Thursday that Harris doubled down on her support for reparations after agreeing with a host on the popular radio show “The Breakfast Club” that the race-conscious policy was necessary to address the legacies of slavery and discrimination in the United States. "We have to be honest that people in this country do not start from the same place or have access to the same opportunities," Harris said in the statement to the Times. "I’m serious about taking an approach that would change policies and structures and make real investments in black communities." Policy experts say it could cost several trillion dollars. Scholars estimate that black families earn just over $57 for every $100 earned by white families, according to the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey. U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., who is also running for president, has proposed helping poor children by giving them government-funded savings accounts that could hold up to $50,000 for the lowest income brackets, the Times reported. U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., supports a plan to allow Americans without checking accounts bank at their local post office. Seeing that the majority of black Americans came to the U.S. voluntarily after the civil war - there is no reason to be handing out reparations to descendants of people who have basically no linage back to slavery in the U.S.
If we deducted the amount of free shiite that has been given out over the years from the reparations amount, they would owe the country.
First of all this is the descendants of enslaved peoples’ country more than the vast majority of Americans. The lineage of enslaved people on this land goes back almost 400 years. By all rites of this is without a doubt their country more than most. How can they owe their own country and why would they owe the country something a citizen of another race would not. And what if we deducted the amount of free labor from the gdp of the country for the 200+ years of slavery? This country would not be the power it is today, and certainly not the power it was prior to the civil war. What I will say is reparations while morally right are not strategically the smartest way to go. If reparations were paid it would give a basis for removing and undermining civil rights legislation. Mind you all now black folks pay taxes too so they would be paying for reparations themselves.
How about just addressing race relations in an honest and fair way rather than insulting black Americans by pandeirng to them on reparations transparently just to get votes.
