The DSM has it's uses for basic diagnosis of an underlying condition. But since it can never pinpoint the cause, the treatments they suggest are merely band-aids.
I thought Tom Cruise was a wingnut whacko after his Today show interview, but what I found out was he was pretty dead on in his ripping apart psychiatry. Dole out the drugs, and see what happens. I had the unfortunate experience of being put on one. Holy fu--, that was a terror show. That was far worse than what was going on with me. I have read either as a result of the NFL stuff or the publicity from it, the profession is moving into different things and using brain scans and such to help figure out what is going on instead the automatic psycho drugs.
If you reformed medical insurance psychiatry might get better. Having to stick to the largely insurance company requirement to have your back covered causes a lot of straitjacketed thinking. Pun intended.
