Bottom line: It was over two years into Bush's term and a full year and a half after 9/11 before the U.S. invaded Iraq. Clearly this was something not rushed into on a whim. My guess is, if after 9/11 Saddam had issued a conciliatory, sympathetic message he would have gotten a pass. Instead he tried to stick it up our ass one last time. Bad move.
