The real question for me is, how bad was wokeness, really? Was it a genuine cultural shift, a collapse in intellectual freedom, or just a passing fad exaggerated into a manufactured crisis by far-right media? You’d think they might have learned from Lord of the Flies, where naive groups invent scary monsters to justify their fears. Interestingly, the people most concerned about wokeness often seemed to be the least intellectual, contrarians as intellectual at best, unwittingly rejecting one form of totalitarian groupthink only to embrace another. Personally, I didn’t like wokeness, but I can’t say I ever encountered anyone particularly 'woke,' even though I sometimes gave lectures at a university. Once, I was affronted when the term 'blacklist' had to be changed, but after a moment, I understood the reasoning. Still, I now see overt bullying replacing what used to be gentlemanly behavior. Maybe I was just lucky, or perhaps my lack of alignment with anything 'airy-fairy' or 'queer' made me an uninteresting target. Or maybe the whole phenomenon was largely a propoganda fever dream of the right for the purposes of engineering a result.
