It's horrible parenting. You see it all over the inner city. Rather sit on a porch and collect welfare than go to work. Passes right on to the kids. Education isn't going to help because being an idiot rapper or bball player has more "street cred" than getting a job and getting somewhere in life. Whoever wrote that article is an idiot.
It's basically a false 'theory'. The rise of China proves it... back in the mid 80's early 90's, they were so broke; mud huts look like hotels. Today they are the manufacturers for the world. Although through shady means, but that is another story for another time.
Smart is based on rank and file ASVAB AFQT. Yes, having psychological problems includes ever seeing therapists, and this declines revenue earned in 2000 dollars by $5,000 annually by age 40, so you'll earn $100,000 less over 20 years by this measure and the ASVAB percentile point is worth $265 annually at age 40, so the idea that one can advance themselves without the internet is sound, even if that post didn't make it one day I will post the IQ and Income paper I wrote as a Junior at Centre College. China is still terribly impoverished and practically nobody there as a percentage of the population could pass or even hope to do well on the questions in the ASVAB.
If poverty impedes cognitive function, then why does Gordon Gekko want people who are POOR, smart, and hungry? Is it possible that poverty on certain people puts cognitive function on hyper-drive?
It's a euphemism that supposedly makes them "work hard." You work hard? Bet you stayed up all night analyzing some crummy dogshit stock to give to me, and where'd it get you? My father worked like an elephant 'till he dropped dead at 49 with a heart attack and tax bills. Wake up will you pal? If you're not inside, you are outside, ok? And I'm not talking about some nothing dirty low life lying for his class and being comfortable I'm talking about liquid. Rich enough, to have your own jet. Rich enough, not to waste time. Fifty, a hundred million dollars, buddy, a player, 1 nothing, now you had what it took to get in my office, the real question's whether you got what it takes to stay? Sorry, Gekko's a stereotype as much as Wall Street can get without being cheesy vindiseil. Smart is the operative word, and they can spot that in an instant looking at test scores when you were 17. They use the word to mean broke, not poor, whereas poor is a state of mind, it really means broke and the smart person knows the difference. Do you? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdV95fC09hE The Gordon Gekko satire about Greed is that it motivates the self-interest that creates prosperity, and less aptly put as the invisible handle self-interested individuals have in their daily lives by Adam Smith.
I think Ace Greenberg (from Bear's best years) said it best: Ace had a familiar saying: 'I won't hold an M.B.A. against you; but I prefer PSDs. A PSD is someone who is Poor, Smart, with a Deep Desire to be rich.' BACK in the days of ticker tape, when Wall Street firms like Morgan Stanley hired young men with pedigrees from colleges like Princeton and clubs like Piping Rock, Bear Stearns was the kind of place where hardscrabble Brooklynites could get a job. Bearâs former chairman, Alan Greenberg, known as Ace, even had a name for these hires: P.S.D.âs, as in Poor, Smart, with a deep Desire to become rich. Not only did Bear fulfill the dreams of the P.S.D.âs, it was also a proving ground for many of the titans who created todayâs Wall Street.
Probably that's where Gekko got the line from. Gekko is modeled after a real Wall Streeter like H. Kravis. Just like Gekko, Bear Stearns had no pedigree and no friends on Wall Street.
Can I presume that all three of you have numerous peer-reviewed publications (in top-tier journals, of course!) that allow you to argue against the hypothesis presented in the abstract? I can't see how else you can refute the conclusions without even reading the paper. I do sincerely doubt that any of you actually subscribe to Science or are active members of AAAS. Here on ET we have a bunch of people that, on average, can't wrap their heads around simple bond calculations, option theory or probability. However, they feel qualified to argue economic theory or experimental psychology.
Well, you could argue also that wealth impedes cognitive function. I read the article up to the point it asked for personal info. or money in order to continue reading. I forgot which. It wasn't convincing nonetheless. Besides, most research is biased towards the view of the person funding the research. So many poor Asians around the world kick ass in school. How do they do it? They are poor. Their cognitive function should be retarded. It should not be possible. Also, why does Hank and Gordon seek poor, smart, and hungry workers. They should not exist. Poor and smart should be mutually exclusive. Can't have your cake and eat it, too, if you won't. Hehe. If you won't. IMO, it's probably not poverty that impedes cog. function. It's probably something else. Also, many research done on people exclude Asians. It's usually white, black, and hispanic. Isn't this a major flaw?
