Here in the US small claims court is limited to a few thousand dollars in damages depending on state. Anything larger than that is handled in civil court vice criminal court, which seems to be the distinction you were looking for, although civil cases can have juries as well. Hey, on the bright side having no clue how the justice system works at least means you've never had to participate in it!
