Gotta say lavasoft's adaware works great, run it a couple times a week as it's practically impossible to not download spyware just by going to sites. Run it a couple times a wk. This spyware crap runs constantly in the backround and uses resources.

Be aware of sites that you visit. It is very common for
these new marketing sites to install stuff on your machine
which binds into your IE and/or desktop. My wife screwed my
machine at home by visiting some site which installed some
crap on my machine. F*$ked the desktop and IE.
Kept getting banners and pictures on the desktop and popups.
Eventually had to do a reinstall of windows.

Elitetrader doesnt have popups of any kind, thankfully, and if you
are getting these with this site then that would imply that some
ad software (also called spyware) is installed on your machine.
I would try using Lavasoft adaware first to see if it will pick up
anything. If it doesnt work then you may have to reinstall to rectify the problem.

Hope you sort our your problem.

  5. Wy wife's computer picked up a pop-up ad that, when minimized, disappeared into a corner of the screen so small I couldn't grab it with the mouse. I actually had to edit the registry and re-size IE's default window size. I am so f- - - -n sick of some pimply-faced prick sitting in front of a Dell computer somewhere coming up with new ways to louse up my machines. Even these ebay sellers who use blasting sounds, custom cursors and other assorted nonsense with their auctions. And what's this shit now with these ads that superimpose themselves on your IE window and you have to wait for the stupid-assed performance to end before you can continue using YOUR OWN machine.

These advertisers have some set of balls.

They are all amateurs compared to the pop-ups on porn sites. They've taken it to a whole higher level. You know it's bad when you have to hardboot your computer just to get rid of them, then they infect files everywhere on your hard drive. Almost as bad as AOL.

ZoneAlarm Pro work good to stop ALL advertisements and
pop- ups as long as you have privacy "on" for Internet Explorer.
also downside to it :( I have to switch it off if I need to log in to some web sites otherwise to my personal surprise work well

you can use task manager (Win NT or 2000) to close any running applications even if it so small.
if it win 98 you can do :Ctrl/Alt/Delete in little window comes up remove whatever you need.

As an aside - there is also www.mailwasher.net for
    spam mail...

Only downside is it doesnt integrate into the mail software
    but its a great program.
