Trump was just a means to get the ultra conservative platform back front and center, the candidate was not the key since that is who the primary process thrusted on them. So when it came down to HRC who threatened their ultra conservative views or Trump who basically changed his stripes to mimic the ultra conservative platform to get elected it was an easy choice for them. And since Trump is controlled by the ultra conservatives, they have their puppet leader needed to push their platform. Trump's policies were pretty liberal and support was mostly democratic before he ran for office but that mattered little to those who needed him to get to power. That is why you hear people constantly proclaim they don't care about Trump but just that their party won and the team around him is controlling the policy.
Sorry the context of what I was saying got left off. Wallet was stating that it is not Trump but the ideology that appealed to conservatives. In reality whatever dust bunny emerged from that clown car of the 2016 GOP primaries was going to get full support simply based on the base, not who the person was. And the ideology was being created by real people in power and Trump was the puppet being led around since all he wanted was adulation to feed his ego. If he was told to say something and the people cheered and chanted he would repeat anything the conservatives told him to say. I met many fellow GOPs in my travels in the South and they all seem to say the same thing despite what FOX news claims, Trump is a moron but he is pushing the conservative agenda while pissing off the Left so they will support him even if he lies on certain things and fumbles and stumbles. No one cares how many pussies he grabbed or how many lies he tells because until 2018 he was pushing their agenda. However losing the House in 2018 was the consequence and they are quietly hoping he shuts up enough to keep Senate and the WH in 2020. They really don't care because the ends justify the means. There is of course the brain dead segment that just follows what is fed to them but Trump is the brain dead follower being puppeted around as well so good match.
