My point is and it is very simple is that the GOP devised and used a strategy known as the "southern strategy", it started with I think Goldwater and was perfected by Nixon and was continued to some degree by both Bushes. The map shows it worked. Before 1964, no Republican had a snowballs chance in hell to win in the south. The race based soutern strategy borrowed a chapter from the race based, post war/reconstuction, race based Democratic strategy of appealing to southern whites by being anti civil rights and against any attempt to weaken the south's segregationist laws.
