It's amazing that this thread keeps on going and going...I remember when it started and I remember playing with Tradernick at Planet Poker a few times.
I'm still at it...playing 2/4 and 3/6 limit ring games at Party and hitting the Crypto skins for the monthly bonus'.

  3. Yeah at the casino I'll definitely be "dead fish" so to speak but don't get a chance to play live poker much and think I'll enjoy myself more at some no-limit. I've barely gotten my feet wet online in NL so any kind of advice is appreciated. :)

I'm actually under the impression that live (B&M) games tend to be softer than their online counterparts. Many more flat out tourists in the casino just looking to gambooooool it up.

  5. Hey, if you're a trader, you can win at the NL tables right away, IMO. You don't need to be a dead fish for long. If ewile is right about the live games being softer than the Party NL $25 games...sheesh. I mean that is hard to imagine, but may be true.

Tight-aggressive play at the NL games just means what you were mentioning earlier - wait until you have a hand then bet it hard. You will get so many bad calls, it will be difficult to believe. You will lose badly when someone catches up on the riv, but you will win in the long run. If I hit a losing streak, I always switch to the single table Sit 'n Go tourneys, where you pay your $10 (plus $1 for the house) and then play 9 other guys, until one guy has all the chips. Top three finishers are in the money. I find this is a great way to decompress and refocus on your task which is to avoid putting all your money in when the odds aren't clearly in your favour. At the SNG games I generally sit out the first 20 or thirty hands unless it's KK or AA, just so that a few fish can eliminate themselves.

Try PokerStars, where they have 9 guys at a table so it's slightly easier to finish in the money.

This is all online advice, of course. No SNG games live yet, I don't think.

If you are interested in honing your game, try spending a few hours at the 2 + 2 site

Everything you need to regularly beat the $25 NL online tables is there. Right now I am working on better positional play, which is hugely important. If you are not considering your position before every move you make, if you are not asking yourself whether you will be first or last to act, you are leaving money on the table.

I just started playing hold 'em after never having enjoyed cards in my entire life. I must say that there are parallels to trading, and I'm enjoying the game alot.

perhaps sometime all us ET folks that play party poker can get a table there together and play some cards.

  8. Yes. Position is everything. You can win so many pots just by betting on the button after everybody checks that its almost mandatory.:)

  9. How do you guys feel after a bad beat, vs. after some bad trading luck? Bad beats kill me, while I can laugh off bad trading luck. I don't really understand why. Example from this week...

Poker: Playing a multi-table with 2000 entrants. After the second break i'm doing great, with a pretty big stack, and I see a favorable deal if I push against this other big stack with AK. He calls and turns over AQ yet I lose. I felt really horrible, almost like I wanted to cry.

Trading: Thurs I exit a ZN long at my carefully planned place where the probability is low that the trade will make any money, for a small loss. Turns out to be the low of the day. The ZN trades only 50 ctcs down there and mounts a huge reversal.
    I found this rather amusing.

    Funny thing is...
    (1) Both losses were negligible compared to the accounts
    (2) The trading loss was 3X the $ amount of the poker loss

Why does it hurt to lose so much more in poker??

  10. Nik, since you have a good NL money game, I don't understand why you don't play it on Lev 1-2 in the SNGs?
