Poker and the Beginning Trader

  1. Do any of the rooms have a way for a beginner to "watch" the games and tourneys without playing? I looked around some of the sites, but didn't see how it could be done.

  2. Sure. Any of the sites. Just download the software and you can watch any game. They also have lots of free games to learn on.

  3. Thanx, I'll give it a try!

  4. lol.... had to laugh when I read this. The fact is - I experience exactly the same thing. When I flop quads I feel no elation whatsoever. I merely look at my stack and those of the other players and try to figure out how best to play it. The best way I can describe my emotions when winning is 'cold resolve'.

My biggest leak BY FAR is the emotional reaction to a bad beat or a bad mistake in play or a player who is just bullying the table with no cards and winning by doing it.

Explain it? Very tough - after all, was it you or someone else who pointed out that these bad players making bad calls are what makes us money at the lower limits. Logically, I should be thrilled when my made nut flush all-in flop raise is called by buddy with a rag pair, who goes on to make the absurd runner runner boat. Give me that all day long, right?

I expect, though, that the answer has something to do with that most prevalent of motivators.... fear. The other one, sex, doesn't seem to be in play here :)

  5. This is a very key point in poker and trading. Is logic or emotion going to rule? The law of averages RULES and is your greatest friend! Your own negative emotions are your enemy.

  6. I'm recognizing this fact as one of the biggest impediments to overcome if I'm to continue trading for a living and actually enjoy what I do. No matter how fast my equity is rising on a good streak, I frequently still feel frustrated that I didn't take out or keep more than I could have from the market. The good days end up being nowhere as good as the bad days are bad, know what I mean? :)

This is my first weekend at my new place. So I am out getting all kinds of stuff, and on the way out I see about 20 tables and about 100 chairs outside my building. I think to myself that this is kind of odd, but I am too busy to even think about what the hell is up.

On the way home, I see the two front doors to my building are open, with people streaming into the building. I come in, and a huge plume of cigarrete smoke is coming out of this unit. Two guys come in and as I am carrying my stuff up the stairs, this guy comes out and opens the door and I peek thru the door and see about five or six tables lined in green felt with chips and cards on these tables

I think these guys are running their own casino in my building!!!! LOL

I wonder if they play Bridge for money?

  8. Sure, there are plenty of pro-bridge players.
Although, I'm not too fond of their World Championship drug testing rules...

    _______

Disa Eythorsdottir was stripped of a silver medal at the 2002 Bridge World Championships in Montreal because she refused to take a drug test. Eythorsdottir said she'd been taking diet pills and was concerned about a false result.

``What did they think I was taking, smart pills?'' asked Eythorsdottir, an native of Iceland who now lives in Huntsville, Alabama. ``The moment I invent smart pills, I won't have to play bridge for a living.''

``Bridge players on steroids,'' Eythorsdottir said. ``Now that's a scary thought.''

    LMAO :D :D :D

PS. The pro bridge circuit is not the same thing as playing bridge for money (Rubber Bridge.) One is a form of "gambling" (Rubber Bridge) the other is a job.

I like to play Warcraft 3 on the side when I'm not reading
books on trading when the market is closed.

I got this interview from wc3addicts.com

Tillerman, one of the best competitive WC3 players when
the game first came out. He plays games professionally
in a clan called 4 Kings which is sponsored by Intel.

Arse00455: Hello Tillerman, what have you been doing the past few months?
4K^TillerMaN: Since Nov1st, soon after WCG, I took up Poker. I have been playing it ever since. In fact, the last game of Warcraft 3 I played was vs Grubby at WCG.

Arse00455: You already were a croupier at a casino if recall it correctly, is that right?
4K^TillerMaN:Yes, it was but it doesn't really have any real bearing on my choice to play Poker or even help me much as my Casino never offered any form of Poker.

Arse00455: I see, what were your reasons to stop playing wc3 and start playing poker?
4K^TillerMaN: I had always been slightly disappointed in Warcraft 3 to a certain extent. There always seemed like there was too much luck or imbalance in the game, for the last few months of War3 I felt I was only playing for money, through training on commentaries etc.
4K^TillerMaN: I wanted to try something else and my friend NTT (famous from BW) was already playing Poker for many months. He had tried to persuade me many many times to try Poker but I always refused. I finally relented and tried and got hooked hardcore on it.

Arse00455: Is playing poker a very lucrative business so far for you?
4K^TillerMaN: Well, since I started in Nov1st I've made about $80,000. Most of that has come in the last couple of months tho as I now play much higher limits.
4K^TillerMaN: I have also won entry in the "World Series of Poker" this year. Which is like Pokers WCG except with a much bigger prize (probably around $3,000,000 this year for 1st place).
I'm flying to Vegas in May to take part in it.
Arse00455: Holy cows, that's a whole lot of money!

Arse00455: Then, my final question since we were trying to make this a mini-interview: will we ever see you playing Warcraft 3 (or another game for that matter) again, even if it is just for fun?
4K^TillerMaN: At the moment all I can say is that it is unlikely I will be playing Warcraft 3 again. Never say never though. As far as other games go, I will most certainly try them such as Halflife 2 , WOW and Doom3. And one final thing: Big shout out to my clan for winning WC3l this year!

Arse00455: Ok that'll be enough for now, thank you very much for your time Tillerman, and good luck in the future with your poker business.
    4K^TillerMaN: No problem.
