I have been playing poker online now for over 6 months. I have been playing Texas Holdem no limit for 5 years now on and off against real people. Here is what I have found as far as online play goes.... At first I started to play on the low limit tables 1/2 2/4 turned out to be a complete waste of time. I knew the game well enough but the river bettors all over the place get very annoying. I went up to 5/10 and now play on that size table only. Also I started out with no limit but only play Limit now. I have been able consistenly everytime over a 5 hour period to start with 250 dollars and turn it in to 350-500 without fail in any session. I play tight I play only with good hole cards and I know how to cut my losses fast and drop a hand when I know I am going against someone with a made hand. I remember the river bettors and those who play with bad hole cards and I know how to really crush them when I have the good hole cards down. I also play the 20 dollar Limit Texas Hold em tournaments. I have played 20 of them in the last 30 days. I have come in 1st on 9 of them. 2nd place on 4 of them. 3rd place on 2 of them. The rest I finsihed out of the money. The game requires major patience to the point it should be a mechanical boring procedure. Waiting for good hole cards and knowing how to bet properly will crush many suckers on the online poker sites. I will continue to play at these levels for another few months and then graduate to the 10/20 talbes later on. A friend of mine from England has been playing poker now for over 8 years as his sole source of income. He is 34 years old. Single no kids. I trade for a living so to me poker is now used to kill the downtime during the trading day or after hours when the market closes. My friend taught me alot about Hold em and what cards to stay in with and how to read players put that together with many years of Hold em play and its has really clicked together. For example: I only play hole cards in a limit non tournment game that are j/10 or better. Suited connectors such as 8/9 I will play as well if I am close to the button. I will fold an a/6 unsuited as fast as the wind if I am far from the button. I will limp in with and a/6 unsuited if I am the small blind and next to the button or the button. Thats how you have to learn how to play. Position and cards and betting. Learning how to check raise is important as well. Also if you have decent hole cards but you find yourself in a situation where 5 players stay in all reraising each other I drop immediately unless I have really powerful hole cards. You want enough players in to make money but you cant win when too many players feel that good about their cards either. You have to also know how to calculate pot odds as they call them. I could gon on and on but you can find out for yourself with time online if you want to. Good luck.
Mostly Party $200+15 and $100+9 NL HE single table tourneys. Always two tables at once. Also a little Limit Omaha/8 between 10-20 and 30-60 (Party + Stars). Usually three tables at once for the simple mechanical game of o8. Also some Multi table tournaments. I took 2nd in Sunday's $109 + rebuys NL HE on Stars for over $9K. (User name Qikk on Stars, Frozen_Fish on Party.)
Sweet. Well, what's worth reading? To give you an idea of what I like to read... my favorite trading books in the world are Wycoff's ""Studies in Tape Reading" (1910) and Neill's "Tape Reading and Market Tactics". Basically they talk about the roots, what really matters... not tail-wagging-the-dog type issues. If's there's any poker books like that I'd love to read 'em. Thx!
I'd suggest you stick to the 2+2 books, mainly Sklansky. First, read this one: Hold 'Em Poker by David Sklansky Next, read: Hold'Em Poker for Advanced Players by David Sklansky, Mason Malmuth For tournaments: Tournament poker for advanced players (Sklansky) For Omaha/8: High Low split Poker for Advanced players (Ray Zee) ...but since you mentioned something about deep roots and such, I think your favorite may just be "The Theory Of Poker" (Sklansky) Good luck (Even though everybody's luck is quite equal in the long term)...
I play the 200 nl all the time, they have gotten a lot tougher the last few months, used to be able to play tight and almost be guaranteed at least 3, now that only get's u 5th (outta the money), then gotta get lucky at times when blinds get big, but still profitable....

I came across this thread about nine months ago, and the case Trader Nik made for learning this game compelled me to give it a try. Now understand, I had never played poker before in my life and haven't even heard the term "hold'em" before reading it here. Now that I've had some time playing this game, I'd like to share my experience with it. This is an amazing game! It's about as close to a perfect proxy for trading as you will find out there. For instance, the psychology lessons. Not to slight the good work Dr. Tharp and Mr. Douglas have done but, hold'em will put you in a real world scenario where you have to develop the right "mind-set" to be successful (i.e. playing without emotion, having the discipline to stick to your gameplan etc.) Which IMHO goes a long ways further than reading something out of a book. Money/risk management. I think one will more clearly understand the concepts of risk and probability and how you should play only when they are in your favor. I often find myself asking "What is the probability (or odds) of this event occurring and is the risk/reward ratio higher or lower? I never asked those kinds of questions before this! (I also suspect that I know more about game theory than I am actually aware of also.) There many other aspects of trading and life in general you discover if you play this game long enough. And lastly, It's a fun game to play. I find myself playing for hours at a time on the weekends. -BTW I've been able to take a $50 stake and increase it ten-fold playing online Trader Nik. Thank you. Sincerely... Thank you, not only for this new insite into trading, bit also showing me a way to make a little extra spending money on the side. P.S. Here is a list of the books, software etc. I used to learn hold'em: Winning low limit Hold'em- Lee Jones Hold'em Poker for advanced players- Sklansky, Malmuth The theory of poker- Sklansky Zen and the art of poker-Larry W. Phillips The complete book of Hold'em Poker-Gary Carson Wilson's Turbo Texas Hold'em Software
I knew that name looked familiar! I don't know anything about Chimera, but you're certainly in the right place to ask those questions (Elite Trader). I'd say over 80% is from sng's. No idea how many I play. I'm sloppy with records...
