Great post. I just read stock market wizards by Jack Schwager and almost all of the excellent traders play poker and use analogies from the game. interesting.
F.Y.I Each Thursday at 1:00 to 2:00 Pacific Time, there is a radio show called Poker Talk on www.voiceamerica.com. I just found out about it. Hopefully I'll catch this weeks show. Here's the description of the show: "Poker Talk " "Poker Talk is a interview show with key players and management in the Poker World. Two of the leading figures in the poker publishing world will release valuable information each week by getting their guests to answer tough questions of an informative nature. Audience members who are listening live will have the opportunity to call in and ask the hosts and the guest questions."
You guys might also want to check out UltimateBet.com, which has all the stuff that has been mentioned and is one of the biggest sites. I'm not sure if UB is bigger than ParadisePoker, but the've got to be pretty close. For Example, it's Saturday night (peak time) and there are over 4,500 players seated at UB right now. They have a different tourney every hour and all sizes of cash and play chip tables. If you watched the "World Poker Tour" this year on the Travel Channel, you're familiar with UB. That guy from Finland who beat the pro's in Aruba won his entry online at UB. If you happen to stop by, my handle is PruBear (yes, like the mutual fund) so give a hollar. www.ultimatebet.com
Shithead politicians trying to ruin a good thing: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030731/ap_on_go_co/internet_gambling_2 By ROBERT GEHRKE, Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON - A Senate committee approved legislation Thursday that would ban illegal gambling on the Internet and closed a potential loophole that the Justice Department (news - web sites) has said could actually legalize gambling in states where it is now prohibited. The legislation prohibits the use of credit cards to place online wagers. Operators of Internet gambling sites could be sentenced to up to five years in prison. The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee voted unanimously to send the amended bill to the Senate for consideration. "This action moves us very close to ending an activity that preys on children, is rife with fraud and aids (news - web sites) money laundering by organized crime," said Sen. Jon Kyl (news, bio, voting record), R-Ariz., the sponsor of the legislation. _________________ Also, see extensive threads on this topic at: http://www.twoplustwo.com/
Here's an interesting article that appeared in the Los Angeles Times (Orange County edition, I think) a couple of weeks ago about Stanford Wong (John Ferguson). I believe he's a friend of Don & Bob Bright - who also have a tale or two about poker AND trading..... http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-golden24jul24,1,4060907.column
the softest games are at partypoker, and it is by far the biggest site. they absolutely blew up by advertising heavily during the World Poker Tour events. a big gamble that has really paid off. the games are soft because most of the players are very new to the game. i play there and at the tournaments on pokerstars. in terms of largest sites, rounding out the top 4 are ultimate bet is third, followed by paradise. http://www.pokerpulse.com/ i'm going to start playing at ultimatebet, since they are a sponsor for the Aruba World Poker Tour event, and they have satellites to get in. a satellite is when you play in a low buy in tourney, then if you win, you prize is a higher buy in tournament. to buy in directly to the Aruba WPT event is $4,000, and that is the cheapest WPT event. most are $10,000. i've been playing a lot lately, with the goal of playing in some of these World Poker Tour events. like trading, i struggled at first, then found my niche when i switched from the hold'em limit tables to the no limit single table tournaments on party poker. my next step has been to the mutli-table tournaments. i'm up about $1500-2000 this week, after a 5th place finish out of roughly 230 (+550), a 2nd place finish of 180 (+1900 -- bad beat cost me a thousand here. higher buy-in at this one), and a 3rd place of 360 (+880). adding them up, you can see i've played in a lot of them, and haven't won them all, but the occassional high finish is all you need. hopefully the evolution continues. the thing with these multi-table tournaments is that they are extremely top weighted. i've been in numerous tournaments where i've beaten out 90% of the field and come away with nothing, or very little. you not only have to play nearly flawlessly, you need above average cards, and you can't have any bad beats. conversely, the single table tournaments payout the top 3, or 30%. i hope the trend is towards a flatter payout structure, like in golf.
