Please recommend good training for petroleum trading?

  1. Hi all,

I am seriously and sincerely looking for good (online/offline) training programs/classes/coaches for petroleum trading and the petroleum industry (refineries, pipelines, products, etc.)

Could you please give me some pointers?

    I really appreciate that.

    Thank you!

  2. Thanks a lot Rubibond007.

I browsed the website and found many courses and sub-courses...

I am a bit lost - for example, if essentially I am looking for something like

"Essential petroleum knowledge for a physical oil/gas trader"

i.e. I wanted to study the petroleum stuff not for becoming a petroleum engineering, but for becoming a better oil/gas trader (I already have the financial and quant side knowledge) ...

    What courses/sub-courses I shall take?

Thanks a lot and I really appreciate your opinions.

  3. Hi pal. I have a few webpages but most of them offers only personal training in London and in Houston but not online. The ICE trading floor at NYC offers from time to time some very good training courses. (London and Geneva are the world centers of physical oil trading)

The best way to learn about the intricance of oil trading is to land a Job in the field with a good Physical Trading House. Here's a Good webpage to find one.

If you need anything just let me know!

I found my way into trading commercial energy with luck and timing: I was a degreed engineer at the country's largest utility who also happened to lease a CBOT seat and trade bonds. When the utility wanted to start up an energy trading desk in the early 90's it was a simple departmental transfer.

Here is a link, just find a junior assistant job at a physical desk at take it from there. Be a gopher, this is all about mentoring because books cannot explain physical energy trading:

  5. Thanks a lot rubibond007!

Could you give me some pointers about personal training in Houston? I am currently located in NYC so Houston could be an option too.

Hopefully by completing these training courses I will have something to say on my resume in order to land a job with a physical oil trading house.

I browsed the Selbyjennings webpage you gave - they all need some sort of prior experience in the field. My background is in quant/systematic global macro trading in commodities and futures. Although I do trade futures a lot, but I haven't got a chance to be specialized in the physicals...

Here is from the Selbyjennings webpage: "In order to perform this role ideal applicants will have a background in refining, industry market analysis and energy markets including Crude oil, naphtha, freight etc.
This is not a quantitative analysis role however additional programming skills could be potentially advantageous."

So hopefully I could ramp up my knowledge in "refining, industry market analysis and energy markets including Crude oil, naphtha, freight etc."...

Could you please give me more suggestions?

  6. Thanks a lot Bone for sharing your experiences and giving me the pointer!

I am browsing your webpage - hopefully I can get a chance to get into the field. My background is in quant/systematic global macro trading in commodities and futures. Although I do trade futures a lot, but I haven't got a chance to be specialized in the physicals... And hopefully by moving into specializing in energy trading and combining physicals and financials together, I can leg one level up and develop some edge in trading...

Miz, you really want to have everything laid out for you by others. Why not expend some proactive effort on your part searching around for yourself for some period of time.

  8. Points well taken Bone! That's what I am doing day and night these days... googling at lot these days... During this process of course pointers are appreciated! Thank you!
