Pictures of your trading stations

  1. Dart,
Two suggestions and a two-part question. I've never used any more than 6 monitors and even then I felt like I lost the mouse cursor - do you feel that way? Especially since the monitors aren't tight with no gaps?

First suggestion - use something bland, simple and easy on the eyes for a background. Solid black, grey, brown, green (pastels, etc. easy on the eyes) but also contrasting to your charts. A picture may confuse your eyes among smaller grouped charts here and there, etc.

Second suggestion - not sure what OS you are running (hope at least W7x64 if not W8.1x64) - you can enlarge your cursor/mouse pointer... it may help if you lose it with that many screens. Even to change the settings to be persistent or blink, etc.

Question part 2 - If you make the changes I suggested does it really help? Honestly curious. Would love to hear "no it was a dumb idea" just as much as a thank you...

Things sure do change. My last post in this thread was post #89 about 9 or 10 years ago. Here is my setup at home. Still a work in progress.

Rent is a bitch but I like the view.

On the left risk management. On the right is the proprietary trading system.
The center panels are the mkt. participants' mind reading screens relaying the data gathered by 300 meters diameter antennas. The white arrow on the second screen from the left is pointing at you.

The problem with portable trading workstations has always been that of the power supply.

One day technology will enable an entirely self contained unit harnessing the power of autoproduced methane gas in the form of an insertable rounded cylindrical device, affordable enough so that it can be issued to all aspiring traders, finally making their common trading experience more real and metaphor free.

Aaaah... A man can dream. A man can dream.

  6. I like my privacy hence the blank background...

This is where I do most of my development work. Desk is an Ikea kitchen table and yes that's a cat toy, a GI Joe and a Tigger toy under the right monitor - don't judge if you don't have kids around!

The top two monitors are angled down. It's a quad setup because the top left is attached to a Linux machine and requires a different keyboard and mouse. You can see the two keyboards at the bottom... Does anyone know where to get a good oversized mouse pad that fits two mice easily?

The top left monitor seems a little out there but it's great for TV streaming or charts for reference. This is a development/work box so top two are just "nice to have" monitors.

The three monitors across the bottom have the usual, charts, RDP sessions, command prompts, etc.

This is what I mean by a larger mouse pad. It's a pain - I'm always pushing one to the side, would be much nicer to get a pad that's 8.5x11 (like a sheet of paper). Open to any suggestions. Have even considered painting the desk surface!

  8. Save yourself from the risk of carpal tunnel. Convert to trackballs. (No longer mouse)... I haven't had wrist pain for over 6+ years.

Mice have been eradicated in my home, all members of family use trackball's.

I even went so far as to insist my son uses trackball in computer class @ school since he was ~ 7-years old. At first instructor resisted, now he has adopted them for himself.

  10. Winston, that looks like the old Dell multimedia keyboard. I use one at the fund where I work, and I absolutely fly on it. It feels a bit cheap but is awesome for when I need to crank out many lines of matlab code. Certainly feels better than all the chicklet keyboards. They have tried to replace it when we got new Dell precisions, but I wouldn't let them.

I do however prefer the daskeyboard (blue switches) for home (which I can't use at work as the clicking will drive my colleagues nuts. Even at home, the wife makes me shut the study door).
