But some attempts to register voters have missed the mark. Salem correspondent Chris Lehman explains. How would you feel if you got a card in the mail inviting a dead relative to register to vote? The Oregon Secretary of Stateâs office has been getting angry calls and letters from people claiming thatâs been happening. The misplaced invites come from special interest groups, not the state. And Oregon elections director John Lindback says itâs not just dead people getting voter registration cards. John Lindback: âSome people are receiving cards in the name of their pets. One card that was returned to us said that the person was six years old. So we just thought it was important to notify the public that these cards are not coming from the Secretary of State.â Lindback says most are coming from a Washington D.C. based group called Womenâs Voices, Women Vote. The organization is trying to register unmarried women in advance of this Novemberâs election. The group harvested names from lists of magazine subscribers and public records.
