It’s the time of year when political campaigns and special-interest groups are trying to sign people up to vote. But some attempts to register voters have missed the mark. Salem correspondent Chris Lehman explains.

How would you feel if you got a card in the mail inviting a dead relative to register to vote?

The Oregon Secretary of State’s office has been getting angry calls and letters from people claiming that’s been happening.

The misplaced invites come from special interest groups, not the state. And Oregon elections director John Lindback says it’s not just dead people getting voter registration cards.

John Lindback: “Some people are receiving cards in the name of their pets. One card that was returned to us said that the person was six years old. So we just thought it was important to notify the public that these cards are not coming from the Secretary of State.”

Lindback says most are coming from a Washington D.C. based group called Women’s Voices, Women Vote.

The organization is trying to register unmarried women in advance of this November’s election. The group harvested names from lists of magazine subscribers and public records.

Any guess which side of the aisle?

  2. The same side that registers illegal aliens and felons and calls any attempt to prevent fraud "racial discrimination?" The same side that provides special instructions on how to get soldiers absentee ballots thrown out?
