He was correct in his analysis of the problem. You don't help drug addicts by giving them needles, you assist them by offering opportunities to get clean. His failing, the failing of the entire nation is to not aggressively get behind drug treatment programs. Everybody talks a good game but try to open a treatment facility or halfway house and then it's all not in my backyard attitudes. That said, do I think Pence is the right guy to take the lead here? No, he is not.

 

I think the people on the ground who deal with the matter first hand, and have the benefit of experience in the field, are in a better position to make the determination of how best to address the problem. We armchair quarterbacks would be wise to not dismiss what they have to say.

A drug addict is going to drug addict whether they have clean needles or not. Pence and the health dept in Indiana absolutely could have a avoided millions in medical bills and services for a few thousand in needles. Now they have HIV infected drug addicts in Indiana instead of regular old drug addicts.
