My first impressions are pawn shop stocks are a good place to hide if one's expecting a downturn or even recession... however do they act like retailers or banks or something else all together?

They are basically legalized crooks. Indeed. They make wonderful money. And when you combine check cashing with pawning you've got a winning combination.
