In my experience, as the proud owner of both a cat and a dog, it's usually the dog that wonders whether it's safe to come out yet.
Yes, that sounds about right. My cat runs away from my 2 year old son, but directly confronts and fights back against dogs who chase him. It would be a very interesting dynamic if I added a big bouncing puppy into the mix. I "threatened" my wife about my plan to add a puppy, and the look I got made ME run and hide.
Hahaha, I can imagine. In all seriousness though, cats and some breeds of dogs don't always mix well with small children.
