Tell that to the families of folks who have died or had related illnesses associated with E coli and Salmonella in the US. Let's see.. there has been spinach, tomatoes, peanut butter and pistachios just in the last year or so and I'm sure I've forgotten some others. Food safety monitoring by most any government is reactive at best and this is certainly true about USA.
