What are the submission guidelines Crossroads Music Publishing has set for songwriters who wish to submit an unsolicited song to their company?

    1. Submission Request

Songwriters should start their submission process by sending a letter requesting permission to submit their work. This letter should include a brief summary of their experience and any previous song placements with other artists. It is essential to be patient and wait for a response following this request.

    2. Understanding Publisher Policies

Most major music publishers, including Crossroads, have policies against accepting unsolicited material due to concerns over copyright infringement. This means that writers must strategize their approach to submitting songs, as unsolicited submissions can create legal complications for the publishers.

    3. Utilizing Industry Connections

New songwriters are encouraged to leverage relationships with Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) such as BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC. These organizations can act as intermediaries, helping songwriters connect with established publishers. Particularly, writer/publisher relations representatives at PROs can facilitate introductions to publishers, enhancing the chances of getting their songs heard.

    4. Persistence and Networking

Songwriters should proactively schedule meetings with PROs and follow up regularly to establish connections. Building relationships within the industry can transform a songwriter's status from "unknown" to someone with a recognizable name. This gradual networking can lay the foundation for future opportunities where submissions are no longer unsolicited.

    5. Attending Industry Events

Joining organizations related to specific music genres can also be beneficial. For instance, for country music, joining the NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International) provides opportunities to meet music publishers in a constructive environment. These gatherings can lead to meaningful connections and insights into the industry.

    6. Professionalism and Patience

It is crucial for songwriters to approach the submission process with professionalism and patience. Respecting the time and processes of publishers is integral to establishing a positive rapport. As songwriters become more familiar to publishers through networking, their submissions are more likely to be considered favorably in the future.

What topics are taboo for songwriters?

Taboo topics for songwriters often include sensitive subjects that provoke strong reactions and may challenge societal norms. These topics can encompass political issues, personal struggles, and themes of violence, sexuality, and morality. Navigating these themes requires careful consideration of potential audience reactions and the artistic intent behind the songwriting.

    1. Political Topics

Political issues are among the most controversial subjects in songwriting. Topics like war, government policies, and specific leaders are often seen as taboo because they can alienate listeners who hold differing viewpoints. However, political themes can also provide rich material for expression and provoke important discussions.

    2. Personal Struggles and Mental Health

Personal topics, particularly those related to mental health, addiction, and trauma, can be considered taboo for some songwriters. These subjects may carry stigma and can be difficult for artists to approach thoughtfully. Yet, they also offer a chance for vulnerability and authenticity, resonating deeply with audiences who relate to these experiences.

    3. Sexuality and Relationships

Themes concerning sexuality, including LGBTQ+ issues and sexual experiences, can provoke debate and backlash. While many artists find empowerment in exploring their sexuality through music, these topics can still be seen as taboo, especially in more conservative contexts.

    4. Violence and Crime

Songs that discuss violence or crime can be incredibly polarizing. While certain genres, such as gangsta rap, have gained notoriety for addressing these issues, they often face criticism for allegedly glorifying violence or perpetuating negative stereotypes. This creates a precarious balance between artistic expression and public reception.

    5. Religion and Morality

Religious themes and moral questions frequently appear in art but can be highly sensitive territory. Lyrics that critique, question, or explore religious beliefs can elicit strong reactions from audiences, making this a potentially taboo subject for songwriters. Addressing these issues requires a nuanced understanding of the audience and context.

    6. Taboo Social Issues

Exploring taboo social issues, such as racism, sexism, or other forms of discrimination, while crucial for fostering awareness and discussion, can also provoke backlash. Artists may face criticism or be labeled as controversial figures for addressing these important topics in their work.

Ultimately, the perception of what constitutes a taboo topic can vary greatly among different audiences. While some listeners may appreciate raw discussions of controversial subjects, others may prefer more palatable themes, such as love and relationships. Thus, songwriters must carefully consider their audience and the implications of their lyrical choices.

Of what should songwriters beware when signing a one-song publishing deal with a music publisher?

Songwriters should exercise caution when considering a one-song publishing deal with a music publisher. It is crucial to understand the terms of the contract, the implications of ownership transfer, and the potential long-term consequences on their rights and royalties.

    1. Contract Understanding

Before signing any deal, songwriters should ensure they completely understand the terms of the contract. This includes the specific rights they are transferring and the obligations they will have under the agreement.

    2. Ownership Implications

A one-song publishing deal often involves assigning ownership rights to the publisher for the lifetime of the song's copyright. This means the songwriter relinquishes certain rights to the song, which can affect their ability to earn future royalties.

    3. Recoupment of Advances

It is important for songwriters to recognize that any advances given by the publisher are typically recoupable from their share of royalties. If the song does not generate enough income, the songwriter may not see any of that advance back.

    4. Potential Loss of Control

Songwriters should be wary that signing a deal may lead to a significant loss of control over their songs. This includes decisions about licensing and the direction of the song's promotion, which would be primarily managed by the publisher.

    5. The Importance of Legal Representation

Before finalizing any publishing agreement, it is highly advisable for songwriters to engage an entertainment lawyer. This step can provide an additional layer of protection and ensure they fully understand the intricacies of the deal

Accepted was your seventh song! Here is your list so far...
    1. Not in the Mood (Country)
    2. God Kind of Life (Country)
    3. Glorify Your Name (Christian/Inspirational)
    4. Seeking Him (Christian/Inspirational)
    5. Road to No Regret (Country)
    6. Ain’t Got Room for You (Country)
    7. Accepted (Christian/Inspirational)
    8. All My Praise (Christian/Inspirational)
    9. I Came Back (Christian/Inspirational)
I'm about to upload "I Came Back." So, if I've done an accurate job of keeping track, I can enter one last song after today.

Singing News Songwriters Search 2024 states that even though all topics and subjects are welcome, Christmas and Resurrection songs are encouraged. Given that each entry is $68.00, more than twice the fee of Great American Song Contest, yet there are fewer prizes, I plan to enter only two songs—one Christmas song (which I already up loaded) and one resurrection song, which I plan to upload around the beginning of October.

Are there any songwriting competitions presently accepting submissions besides the Great American Song Contest, Singing News Songwriters Search and the International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA)?

The Song of the Year songwriting contest is currently accepting entries into its fourth competition for the year 2024. It is important for participants to note that the contest evaluates entries based solely on songwriting merits; production quality does not influence the judging outcome. This means songwriters can submit simple recordings without any professional production, ensuring a level playing field in terms of songwriting skills. The deadline for submitting entries to The Song of the Year songwriting contest is explicitly stated to be November 24, 2024.

The IMSTA Songwriting Competition is also accepting entries from artists of all genres. Aspiring and established songwriters can submit their songs until November 30, 2024. The grand prize is a remarkable collection of software packages valued at over $5,000. Participants will receive notifications if their songs are selected as finalists, and the competition fosters recognition and networking opportunities.

The American Songwriter Song Contest is currently accepting submissions, offering a prize package worth $10,000, along with additional opportunities for songwriters to connect with industry professionals and showcase their skills. The deadline for the American Songwriter Annual Song Contest is January 30. The contest is open to songwriters, artists, musicians, and bands from around the world.

The contest offers a variety of prizes, including: $10,000 in cash, A premium guitar, Global song promotion, and One-on-one mentorship with a major record label A&R executive. The entry fee is $25 per song.

    ALREADY CLOSED:

The International Songwriting Competition (ISC) - Deadline closed on September 18, 2024.
Indie International Songwriting Contest - Deadline closed August 15, 2024.

The Song of the Year Contest (which is apparently conducted FOUR times each year) gives a discount the more songs you enter (up to ten). So, I decided to enter three songs instead of one given that it's a better deal. Two country songs (Road to No Regret and I Ain't Got Room for You) and one Christian song (I Came Back).
