Opening Orders - 2009

Discussion in 'Journals' started by Don Bright, Dec 31, 2008.

  1. 4 fills, 1 long, 3 shorts, 3 winners, 1 loser, +0.10 average.
    Cancelled 50%.
Could have been a little better.
    Easy one.

  2. 6 fills, 4 longs (all winners) 2 shorts (both losers) + .05; AFL best of open hits

  3. opened our envelope a little too much today and missed getting hit on anything! I guess its better safe than sorry at times

  4. I think Don said it best when he commented that one should not to try to outsmart the strategy too much. I've had better success sticking with the envelopes that the futures predict for opening prices and accepting the lower risk that there could be a hard continuation straight off the open. The exception being news driven of course.

Does anyone use a wide envelope like over 2% but do it on like 500 stocks?

Is that a good / bad idea?

  8. I sort of backtested something like that a while ago with shaky results (without cutting the news). The stocks that are going to open at 2% are mostly going to be stocks with news (earnings, up/downgrades) so you will want to cut them from the list and at 2% on the no news ones you are not going to get fills very frequently I think. Maybe it's profitable, but not optimal.
But yes, more stocks with a widder enveloppe is defenitely an approach to it.

    Did not play today.

  9. Today we used a 1% buy and sell side; what about yourself?

  10. We tried something like the large envelope with more stocks but found that the ones that are opening that far from fair value; even if its not a news related stock will tend to keep going and be very painful. We had some fun gains but the losers definitely left a stronger taste in our mouths...
