In the housing market capitalism was never even tried. The government has been meddling in the housing market for decades. The federal reserve keep interest rates low encouraging speculation. Congress passed laws forcing banks to give loans to people who couldn't afford them. Congress encouraged Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to lower their standards for the mortgages they buy, so banks learned they could make dodgy mortgages and pass them off to the GSEs. The only housing market regulation Congress should ever have passed should have been to require a minimum down payment of 20%. Said down payment could not itself be funded by a loan. If people had to put down $60,000 cash to buy a $300,000 house those $300,000 houses would never have been bid up to $600,000. No bubble, no crash, no left wing idiots babbling about how capitalism has failed. Of course liberals in Congress would still be whining that it's racist for people with limited assets and income to have to rent.
