Not religious myself, but possibly the development and sharing of religious beliefs has greatly aided trade and communications between many separate peoples. But you'd have to go back to the Neolithic and Bronze ages in Europe and the Middle East for the benefits. Once organised religion arrived it has been all downhill.

It has suited monarchs, dictators and politicians of all types to emphasise religious differences. Much easier than having to use persuasive reasoning. Much less risky than exercising autocratic power. Looks like its still working.
