Yes according to Options Council, unless the option buyer elects not to do so, any options with strike that's $0.01 above/lower than the underlying market value are automatically exercised.
Let's get this straight. Charles Schwab was NOT the fiduciary here. They have not been a fiduciary for about 20 years...Too much liability. The person working for them should have kept their mouth SHUT and referred to the other company. Basically saying "we provide brokerage services, BUT do not make recommendations", would have been the way to go. I think what the person at Schwab might have done is remain silent...When this woman brought up the concern of not wanting to sell. They should have spoke up and stated we are not experts in this area...You need to consult an attorney, CPA, or a financial expert. I'm just talking aloud in my head. The key for Schwab's culpability is this sentence..."In March 2019, her Schwab broker introduced her to Pinnacle Associates". That can create a trust that should not be there. So by introducing a person to a potential fiduciary, you are creating a "trust and loyalty" to them?? If I go to my attorney and ask for reliable CPAs in town...Does that put the attorney on the spot. What if the CPA was a crook?? Or ask the CPA for a good attorney...This can be very scary. This may have to change how business is done in the future. Networking will become a thing of the past...

ITM calls are automatically exercised at expiration unless you request it not be done. Prior to expiration the calls have to be manually exercised by the call buyer. It has nothing to do with it being ITM a certain amount AFAIK.
