Old tale TWS freak when markets move.

Discussion in 'Retail Brokers' started by NoMoreOptions, Apr 2, 2004.

  1. I had no problems and traded all morning.....my own impression was the markets were essentially in "fast" conditions.......I could be wrong........If you guys think TWS sucks and other brokers have 100% reliability, why not just pull your business with IB?

Some of you guys need to understand how the Internet works.

It is very possible to have one application working on the Internet, and another not working on the Internet.

A connection to the internet requires packets to go thru several "hops." As an example, at the end of this post is an traceroute of the way my packets travel to get to Townsend Analytics (Realtick) except that I have removed the first two hops because I do not want to publish my IP address on an anonymous message board. Notice that there are many hops to the TA server.

Now, it is entirely possible that IB may be up, and _you_ may not be able to get to it because your route (one of the hops) to them has problems, while someone else's route to them may look entirely different. That is why you often see posts on this forum that one guy had problems, while another did not - it is possible that the problem is because our routes to IB may be different.

Please, unless you know what you are talking about, it is best to proceed cautiously until you can pinpoint the problem.

Simply pointing the finger at your broker shows lack of understanding at best.

  3. Thanks for the education.

The goal of this thread is to report the problems and urge IB to fix them regardless caused by bad hops or not.

From what I see, the specific massive problems of last Friday morning was not hops related.

PLEASE DO NOT SPECULATE ON PROBLEM REPORT FROM YOUR FELLOW USERS. IT IS IB RESPONSIBILITY TO FIGURE THEM OUT AND PUBLISH OFFICIAL EXPLANATIONS AND SOLUTIONS which they never did.

  4. I wasn't bashing IB. Friday's downtime was the first time in a couple months that I had more than a few-second outage with them, which is pretty darn good as brokers go. Corroborating someone else's problem report should not be interpreted as a bash.

add me to the list of people experiencing outages around friday's open. it lasted maybe 6 minutes, only had one actual disconnect, but quotes kept disappearing etc. at my end, it's the first time in maybe six weeks that i've noticed anything longer than a momentary glitch.

this fall our capabilities get kicked up a notch and we should have two co-located trading boxes - i'm fully automated - on opposite ends of the continent: will be interesting to see if their is any synchronicity in downtime between the two.

  6. It's amazing that every time I read a post bitching about IB, there is "No More Options". You'd think he'd just change brokers since he is so dissatisfied.

For the record, I had NO problems at all Friday AM. I'd call that well short of "massive".:D

Most of the problems seem to be individual servers going down or degreaded. I have multiple accounts and TWS running and usually when there is an outage, not all of the accounts go down.

When I have one TWS down and the others up, I know it is IB's problem and not a network connectivity problem.

I think that's why everytime someone post's a problem, there are plenty of people posting that they had no problems.. They are probably on different servers.
