If you're sneaky, you could just fill up on red diesel and save like 70% When I was in Ireland, there were guys all over the countryside with tanks of red diesel that they would sell to all their friends for so much cheaper than filling up at the station.
Don't know about Ireland, but here in the U.S. if you use enough diesel to make it worth the hassle to do that (i.e. trucker or some kind of commercial operation) then you get inspected for it pretty regularly and your chances of getting caught are high enough to make it not worthwhile. If it's for your diesel Passat....meah, even if I save a dollar a gallon it's not worth the hassle or even the diesel smell on your hands that you can't seem to wash off for at most a few hundred dollars a year in savings. Our marine diesel here is red/untaxed and I could easily fill up a few jerry cans when I fill up the boat, even have them on the boat for Bermuda trips, but just not worth it.
