This might not be important but an Arab oil trader I know has mentioned a few times how they are "intrigued" by DE BEERS and how they control diamonds. If it is true that Saudi has a limited supply of oil they possibly could move to limit their supply thereby forcing the price up.

On the other side of it I have observed most from this part of the world are compulsive liars and I am extremely surprized the cartel is still intact. Also they all export considerable amounts of oil through the black market.

except saudis don't have anything remotely resembling a monopoly on oil. the best possible long-term event for humanity would be for oil to hold up above $35 for the next while, because it will bring reserves like you wouldn't believe into production. potential canadian reserves alone are 10x saudi reserves.

could you imagine a world where the mid-east becomes irrelevant because their pricing power has been permanently broken?

can you be more specific? the size of the athabasca reserves is well documented, and a sizeable percentage of US oil imports are already coming from there.

Canadians cannot afford a decent POST OFFICE never mind putting money to develope the tar sands. Mind you there is talk of Alberta being the first province to really separate and they would join the US in no time.

right, we're spending money on more useful things - like broadband availability/uptake rates that put the US to shame. tao, over 5% of US oil imports already come from albertan tar sands...

The fact of the matter is Canadian Oil reserves are huge and I would love Canada to become as wealthy Saudi.
