Just started and already feeling potential pain in my business....any container not taken out by last night is left behind and locked up.....carriers can charge detention charges which add up. Multiply that by millions of containers all over the eastern and gulf ports... frickin union holding the entire import system hostage.... Hoepfully it gets resolved in a week and then Kamala can take credit that it got resolved because of her lol.
I wonder if the Pentagon dispatched a courier to the beach to wake up Joe and tell him Iran is getting ready to start WWIII?
That's actually the conspiracy theory going around - that this was all done to get Kamala to suddenly appear and save everyone as the great negotiator. "We're here to negotiate, and settle. Because settling is negotiating, and negotiating is settling, and we have to negotiate in order to settle. It's good to settle."
I tend not to believe it because the longshoreman unions have been in talks for a while ahead of Sept 30th contract expiration. Automation at the ports means less jobs as usual so they are making a last stand. Neither Kammy or dump can do much here because the ILA is dug in to help their base of 45,000 workers covering every port from Maine to Texas. Whatever happens it will be used by both to claim a victory haha. Americans bitch about prices but what they dont realize is: According to a 2022 Container xChange report, the most expensive ports in the world are all in the United States, including the Port of New York, Port of Long Beach, Port of Los Angeles, Port of Oakland, and Port of Savannah. These ports are two to three times more expensive than the port of Hong Kong, and 20 times more expensive than other large Asian ports. One of the largest portion of the cost is port labor who mainly unload containers. Automation helps us keep up with Asian ports and reduce costs but the union will fight that until the end.
Bullshit....Longshoremen were working on ports with hardly anyone around them during COVID versus people jammed into offices on top of each other. Outdoor workers could social distance and work apart easily. They continued working during COVID when trade shut down completely (i.e. not as much work to do). Then they made a fortune (as he admitted) when trade surged and their work allowed them to hire thousands of workers perhaps. Now he wants his cut? fuck him.
I don't think Iran wants a direct conflict. I'd guess there are plenty of closet Persians in Iran and not all that fond of dying for Allah. However, we and Israel would love a direct conflict with Iran. We'll see if the powers that be can create another Gulf of Tonkin.
