The Refco site is still up in all its glory. Look it over, and see if you could have detected anything amiss. I doubt it.
The article doesn't mention the fact that the statements back to 98 were unreliable. They stated great health of the company's finances after the scandle - according to who? Probably true but no accountant was willing to vouch for that.
