Why don't we have just one tax, called a national sales tax; then we have a mandatory balanced budget? Then, we can have "free" healthcare for all. "Free", not just for old people, military people, poor people; for all the people of this country!
This is true. It is the equivalent of having to pay auto insurance simply because you're old enough to drive. Whether you own a car or not would be irrelevant.
It's an interesting question. As far as I know (I'm not a customer), in Canada if you don't pay your healthcare premium, you don't get a card and so you don't get care at the hospital, but you don't pay a fine. Any Canucks want to correct me on that, please do.
Right! It's now a tax based on behavior. So now taxes on fat people, people who don't workout, people who drink too much, who don't drink or eat the right foods, will all be applicable to keeping the costs of healthcare low for the common good. This is absolutely nothing to do with healthcare. Period.
The 'free' healthcare aside, I'm with you. The pros of a simple consumption tax outweigh the cons by an obscene margin.
