I think the attack was a staged attack and that is why there was no response. Amb Stevens had been collecting documents on US involvement with Al Qaeda in the entire Libya operation of the past year. Bad things happen when you go looking for the truth. Those involved in Syria better not look into who is working with Al Qaeda there.

Shaffer said the question now is what precisely Obama did or didn’t do in the moments he saw the attack unfolding. The CIA reportedly made three urgent requests for military backup that were each denied.

“He, only he, could issue a directive to Secretary of Defense Panetta to do something. That’s the only place it could be done,” Lt. Col. Shaffer said.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last week the military did not intervene because they did not have enough information about what was happening on the ground.

Col. David Hunt, a Fox News military analyst, said the military could have had jets in the air within 20 minutes and forces on the ground within two hours.

“The issue is always political with the White House, but the secretary of defense gives the order, has to be approved by the White House, they wouldn’t pull the trigger, and it’s disgraceful,” Hunt said. “We’ve got guys dead.”

 

What we now know with absolute certainty is that the administration knew this was in no way a result of the video. They knew this beyond any shadow of a doubt, and yet that's the story they pushed from day one. So we can conclude with absolute certainty they were guaging the political winds right out of the gate.
We also know with absolute certainty that the major players/decision makers were watching this evolve in real time. We know with absolute certainty that there was enough time to send some type of military response/rescue effort. We know with absolute certainty that someone decided to not do that.
Now the speculation. There is specualtion that Obama watched this and gave no order or opinion. There is speculation that Obama watched and gave an order that assistance should be sent. If that's the case, someone disobeyed a direct order from the Commander in Chief, and did so during a time of war. This person did so in front of witnesses. That seems unlikely considering the consequences of such an action. There is also specualtion that one of the two drones were armed.
I still maintain that the decision was made to do nothing because of collateral damage, both on the ground and political fallout. Someone decided that the lives of these four Americans just weren't worth saving under those circumstances. Disappointing, but not at all surprising considering the policy of this administration, which has one and only one priority. Maintain the appearance that everything is under control, both at home and abroad.

Obama won't even talk about it. He's probably counting the minutes until election day hoping nothing more comes out about this tragedy occuring while he ordered everyone to just sit on their hands.

I'm beginning to think that the Admiral who has been called back to Washington from the Stenis group might have been ready to disobey Obama's order to stand down and had to have others talk him out of taking action himself. I don't know but that seems logical. Everyone just doing nothing does not seem logical.
