Obama wants the ability to shut down the internet at will

  1. Why am I not surprised . . .

Leave it to you to interpret this directive in your typical "fear-mongering" manner, let alone conveniently ignore the fact that this directive and "program" was being developed by the Bush Administration and their DoD.

Quite frankly, I have no problem with it because it involves a branch of the government, and not the general populace of the country.

We need skilled people to step up to the plate during an Emergency. This will help to achieve that goal.

  2. You realize, of course, that it's you (the Republican Far Right) and Fox against the world, right? Would you like a side order of fringe fries with that half-baked ideology?

  3. Cyberspies Penetrate U.S. Electrical Grid

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Cyberspies have penetrated the U.S. electrical grid and left behind software programs that could be used to disrupt the system, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.

The spies came from China, Russia and other countries, and were believed to be on a mission to navigate the U.S. electrical system and its controls, the newspaper said, citing current and former U.S. national security officials.

The intruders have not sought to damage the power grid or other key infrastructure but officials said they could try during a crisis or war, the paper said in a report on its website.

"The Chinese have attempted to map our infrastructure, such as the electrical grid," a senior intelligence official told the Journal. "So have the Russians."

The espionage appeared pervasive across the United States and does not target a particular company or region, said a former Department of Homeland Security official.

"There are intrusions, and they are growing," the former official told the paper, referring to electrical systems. "There were a lot last year."

The administration of U.S. President Barack Obama was not immediately available for comment on the newspaper report.

Authorities investigating the intrusions have found software tools left behind that could be used to destroy infrastructure components, the senior intelligence official said. He added, "If we go to war with them, they will try to turn them on."

Officials said water, sewage and other infrastructure systems also were at risk.

Protecting the electrical grid and other infrastructure is a key part of the Obama administration's cybersecurity review, which is to be completed next week.

The sophistication of the U.S. intrusions, which extend beyond electric to other key infrastructure systems, suggests that China and Russia are mainly responsible, according to intelligence officials and cybersecurity specialists.

While terrorist groups could develop the ability to penetrate U.S. infrastructure, they do not appear to have yet mounted attacks, these officials say.

  5. Yeah, it's just one big conspiracy.
The United States never has enemies, and is never attacked. Everyone loves us.

  6. You have mislabeled me. I'm not Republican nor what you call the Far Right which is the same as the Far Left. Same stuff, different label.

"...against the world....'' ? Like fans rooting for two different football teams, either team win or lose, they are heading us toward the same result. Some just want it faster I guess. I have called Bush a socialist a few times here. Bush and his ilk are not socialist enough for some, they actually want more.

The current crop of global socialist activities will end with the same results as it always had. It's not going to be different this time, we don't have the right people to carry it out this time, we are not more advanced than our predecessors this time, it's not a new paradigm....

  8. Eight

    Eight

This is bogus. For a narrow focused application like the power grid [or trading] air tight security is doable nowadays... it's disinformation, maybe slanted towards blowing some money on infrastructure and messing with Chi Coms and German hackers...

In the face of all the economic and political insanity loose in the world nowadays, I'm going here and I'm not turning back to any political party bullshit ever... forget that shit, forget "it's the economy", I'd rather be free and poor than not free and anything else...

  10. Quite the contrary. I have tremendous faith in the ordinary American. I do not know who you are associating with to get this view. Now put the blame where it belongs and it belongs with some of our gutless leadership!
