If we could afford it, a mandatory 2 year stint in the military for all 18 year olds wouldn't be a bad thing. This would be the broad military, not the fighting military. But basic physical training and then go build a school or something. At 20 with that life experience already under their belt they would make a vastly more informed decision about higher learning. Not to mention if everybody was involved nobody would ever vote to go to war and nobody would ever want to mess with us.
On the one hand, what kind of country sends its women out to fight wars? On the other, they want all the same rights as men, so maybe getting drafted and sent off to kill or be killed in some pointless war should be part of the deal. Obama has basically destroyed the military. Now it is one step from being a university campus, with social engineering its main goal and lawyers sitting in judgment on military strategy. We have $400 mill "Litorial" combat vessels, ie tech-laden coast guard cutters, that can't deploy for 30 days. We have $1bill fighter jets that are too costly to risk in actual combat. The Air Force brass, or maybe just the contractors who own them, want to build a new manned bomber. The Navy wants lots of surface ships. It will figure out later how to staff them and keep them afloat after 15 minutes of actual warfare. In real life, we were supposedly helpless to send a rescue force, even a single plane, to Benghazi, without days to organize it. This is another swamp that badly needs draining.
I've got a win/win idea that's sure to please everyone. College debt is a huge problem and they're thinking about "forgiving" billions in student loans, which means we the taxpayer got stiffed. As one of those taxpayers may I suggest that any loan forgiven should require 3 years military service. Can be in a non combat role and in any branch of the service. Com'on kids, do your part for the country that has given you so much. I know you can do it.
