Scholars Rank Obama the 15th Best President

A group of presidential scholars has ranked President Obama as the 15th best U.S. president of all time, a new survey shows, while his predecessor, President George W. Bush, is relegated to the bottom five.

Mr. Obama also has an advantage in the rankings over President Ronald Reagan, who came in 18th, but President Bill Clinton beats them both in 13th place.

The Siena College Research Institute's Survey of U.S. Presidents, which has been conducted five times since 1982, asked 238 presidential scholars to rank the 43 U.S. presidents on a number of characteristics.

The presidents were given rankings for six personal attributes (background, imagination, integrity, intelligence, luck and willingness to take risks), five forms of ability (compromising, executive, leadership, communication and overall), and eight areas of accomplishment (economic, other domestic affairs, working with Congress, party leadership, Supreme Court appointments, executive branch appointments, avoiding mistakes and foreign policy).

President Franklin D. Roosevelt was ranked the best president ever, followed by Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

While he has only been in office a year and a half, Mr. Obama was rated highly in areas such as imagination, communication and intelligence.

By comparison, Mr. Bush was ranked 23rd when the survey was conducted in 2002, after his first year in office. This year, Mr. Bush was ranked 39th after receiving poor ratings in communication, foreign policy, intelligence, the economy and his ability to compromise. Mr. Bush's best ranking came in the category of "luck," for which he was rated the 18th best president.

The four presidents who were ranked more poorly than Mr. Bush were Andrew Johnson, James Buchanan, Warren G. Harding, and Franklin Pierce.

Every single thing you have lsted here Obama has taken and made worse, Obama got us into two new wars, Unemployment is worse then when Obama took office. Obama took the deficit and doubled it, and will have added more to the debt in his first term then Bush did in 8 years. Obama not only continued the patriot act but signed in laws giving the president the right to assasinate u.s. citizens and is about to sign in a law allowing the military to detain U.S. citizens indefinitely provided they say the person is a terrorist.

Obama also saw that we are currently being bankrupted by entitlement programs and decided to add another whopper which will surely be running half trillion dollar yearly deficits a decade from now if not repealed.

Obama ran as a uniter, and then has been the most divisive president ever, and he doesnt give a shit how much he divides america, so long as he gets a second term.

As it has been said repeately, Bush was horrible and Obama is even worse. the guy is in permanent campaign mode and he sees himself as a bystander in the oval office, while his policies continue to fuck this country up more and more, he just runs around the country pointing the finger at everyone else.

Historians Rank George W. Bush Among Worst Presidents

President George W. Bush is near the bottom of the heap in the latest survey of historians on presidential leadership.

Bush received an overall ranking of 36 out of 42 former presidents—in the bottom 10.

Ronald Reagan was rated 10th best, up from 11th in a similar survey taken in 2000; Bill Clinton was rated 15, up from 21 in 2000. George H.W. Bush went to 18 from 20.

The five best presidents, according to the historians, were Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, and Harry Truman, in that order. Rounding out the top 10 were John F. Kennedy at six, Thomas Jefferson, Dwight Eisenhower, Woodrow Wilson, and Reagan.

  5. Listen, do you think you will ever convince a right-wing retard of the essential truth of the above-mentioned 'facts'. These guys don't typically have the mental aptitude to concede a single point on any issue. It is a waste of time to 'argue' on a message board with these personality types.

Since I tend to be more in the middle I can support any issue or policy on either side IF I truly believe, with integrity, that one party or another has articulated the sounder or more ethical course. Those on the far left and far right do not have that capacity, or chose not to exercise it after being inculcated with ideology and dogma.

Quit making the claim you are in the middle, you are not fooling anyone, you are a far left nut who is no better than any of the far right nuts.

Only a far left loon such as yourself could look at Obama's body of work and defend it, everything Obama has done has either been a doubling down on Bush's policy, or in most cases taking Bush's fuckups and making them even worse. Bush deserves to be second last on the presidential rankings, with only Obama behind him.

  7. These rankings are hilarious. They really demonstrate why going heavily into debt to get a liberal arts degree is beyond stupid.

"Greatness" on their scale means increasing the scope and power of the federal government and forcing liberal policies down an unwilling populations' throats.

Even on that scale Obama has to be viewed as a failure. His leadership has been so lacking that any efforts to deal with health care insurance or the uninsured have been posioned for the foreseeable future. His ineffectual attempts to use kenysian stimulus have discredited that whole school of economics.

    LOL! Really? Where?

    At Siena???

Siena is my Alma Mater (undergrad). That school is a liberal cesspool of hilarity.

And that study is fraught with impossible comparisons and highly opinionated speculation. How can one honestly compare a President like Washington (whom none of the survey writers could know) to Presidents of today?

Hell, one of the highest marks Obama gets is "speaking ability". They compare Presidents who actually had to speak to ones that use the Teleprompter all the time.

    What a fucking joke!

  9. The economy-Obama ended Bush's depression and turned 500,000 + job loses per month that he came into office with into job gains as well as a great stock market turn around.Presidents who do that often get high marks in presidential rankings

    Jobs turn around
