The police union is for sanctuary cities, their are over 200 of these cities, and warns messing with this would marginalize their ability to focus on real crimes since they would be spending all their time doing the grunt work for ICE. The police need to have communication with the immigrant community - that's what these cities accomplish. The police currently turn over criminals with warrants to ICE in these cities currently. The vast majority of these immigrants are law abiding and work - most have jobs, some own a business, many are working on getting citizenship - they make up a good portion of the GDP. Saying sanctuary cities are wrong is like saying America is wrong since these cities evolved to this to better serve the police - hence crime has trended down sharply since these cities emerged. Before you blast me about Chicago or Detroit - these are street gangs primarily U.S. legals in gangs selling dope.
Police warning against cuts to sanctuary cities is a bit different from endorsing them. Of course they don't want their funding cut. So they should either fall into line or shut up and suffer the consequences. Basically your position is that we really have to make a few sacrifices to our standard of living to accommodate this invasion of illegals. One sacrifice is we are setting up no-go zones in effect for law enforcement. They aren't allowed to enforce the law, in the interests of community relations. So we have a group of people who are here illegally sucking down our welfare dollars, committing crimes, filling up our schools and jails and we are supposed to be concerned about what they want? They should be afraid of law enforcement, very afraid. So afraid they decide it's not worth it being a criminal and go home.
We wouldn't want to burden police with something other than writing traffic tickets and playing spectator while thugs burn businesses to the ground.
200 cities would much rather work towards helping those with no criminal records integrate - the states & Fed need the $ badly - every study over many decades shows that even illegal immigrants contribute to much towards the GDP to be cast aside. This idea that they suck $ out of the system is a complete myth - please read the Chamber of Commerce link I attached. Most of the illegals are at various stages working on becoming legal citizens - that is why America as a whole welcomes them as long as they do not break the law as we also support the tightening of the borders and more intensive vetting which is already a reality. As a white guy born in a privileged household in the U.S. my heart goes out to these humble hard working people that put a lot more sweat equity into living in America than I could have ever done. Source: U.S. Chamber of Commerce MYTH: Immigrants come to the United States for welfare benefits. FACT: Undocumented immigrants are not eligible for federal public benefit programs, and even legal immigrants face stringent eligibility restrictions. MYTH: Undocumented immigrants do not pay taxes. FACT: Undocumented immigrants pay billions of dollars in taxes each year. Undocumented immigrants pay sales taxes, just like every other consumer in the United States. Undocumented immigrants also pay property taxes even if they rent housing. More than half of undocumented immigrants have federal and state income, Social Security, and Medicare taxes automatically deducted from their paychecks. However, undocumented immigrants working “on the books” are not eligible for any of the federal or state benefits that their tax dollars help to fund. As a result, undocumented immigrants provide an enormous subsidy to the Social Security system in particular. Each year, Social Security taxes are withheld from billions of dollars in wages earned by workers whose names and Social Security numbers do not match the records of the Social Security Administration (SSA). According to the SSA, undocumented immigrants paid $13 billion in payroll taxes into the Social Security Trust Funds in 2010 alone. MYTH: Immigrants are more likely to commit crimes than native - born Americans. FACT: Immigration does not cause crime rates to rise, and immigrants are actually less likely to commit crimes or be behind bars than native -born Americans. A report from the conservative Americas Majority Foundation found that crime rates are lowest in states with the highest immigration growth rates. In 2006, the 10 states with the most pronounced, recent increases in immigration had the lowest rates of crime in general and violent crime in particular. As far as public schools in 1972 the Supreme Court in a landmark decision found it was more advantageous to have 'illegal aliens" attend public schools. https://www.uschamber.com/sites/def...files/022851_mythsfacts_2016_report_final.pdf
Thanks for clearing that up. I totally trust a study produced by one of the biggest amnesty groups around, the Chamber. Other studies demonstrate pretty clearly that illegal immigration is a big drain on local, state and federal budgets, and it drives down wages of the lowest earning Americans. Illegal immigrants make up a far disproportionate share of the prison population. The main point however is not their crime rate. It is that we should not have to suffer any crime at their hands because they are not supposed to be here. Why is that so hard to grasp? The idea that they are doing us some big favor to come in here is nonsense and is rejected by the vast majority of voters. There are two groups pushing immigration. Employers who want slave labor, and democrats who want to change the demographics of the country because their policies are deeply unpopular with the existing population. Both groups are beyond loathsome.
Would you prefer more sanctuary cities or is the number about right? Why not make all cities sanctuary cities? Why even bother to check if somebody has documents? Why even have a border at all? I'm a libertarian so open borders are fine with me, but illegal immigration is not. You want the worst of both worlds, illegal immigration and no enforcement. How many illegals should we allow in? Is there a limit or a quota? So far all you have stated is illegal immigration is not that bad, and I suppose your solution is just don't do anything about it. Just give them some cities to go to where they won't be harassed.
Always enjoy the wording of this Fiction.... ACTUAL FACT: ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS commit more crimes than native-born Americans based on the number of crimes per their percentage representation in the population. Legal Immigrants commit less crimes than native-born Americans based on the same criteria. You need to define the separation between illegal and legal migrants to arrive at the actual statistical truth. This is not even taking into consideration that illegal immigrants are already committing a criminal offense just by being here.
and on top of that ... more crime is more crime than necessary regardless of the rates vs native born citizens.
It used to be liberals would make their argument by conflating LEGAL an ILLEGAL immigrnts now they are going a step further in their extreme, and trying to say Illegals who come here and commit a crime are the same as LEGAL immigrants, it really is shocking how far some of these politicians are willing to go to pander for votes. I mean in what world does someone have to be living in to think it is a good idea to defend criminals who we can easily just remove from the country. Clearly they arent living in areas where this crime is going to affect them or their kids.
Conflating legal and illegal immigrants is a common tactic of the left, but now they have gone even further by combining criminal illegal immigrants with legal immigrants in an attempt to justify open borders.
